Lebanon approves U.N. tribunal to investigate Hariri assassination

Creation of the United Nations body still faces significant hurdles. It must be endorsed by President Emile Lahoud, a Hezbollah ally who considers the cabinet approval unconstitutional. And the tribunal must win approval from the Lebanese parliament, which is dominated by pro-Western lawmakers but headed by Hezbollah ally Nabih Berri, a prominent Shiite leader who could delay the vote. Attempts by either Lahoud or Berri to derail the investigation could deepen the rifts and heighten tensions... As the Lebanese cabinet moved two weeks ago to give its initial approval to the tribunal, six Hezbollah allies in the Lebanese cabinet resigned in a bid to topple the government. Prime Minister Fuad Saniora refused to accept the resignations, and the cabinet endorsed the tribunal. Lahoud and Berri have deemed the cabinet actions unconstitutional. Resolving the standoff peacefully was already a difficult challenge last week when gunmen killed Industry Minister Pierre Gemayel, a member of a prominent and controversial Christian political family.

This story loaded fine, and when I went back to check something, registration was required. Go figure. Probably because the first visit was from the Google news search results?

Cleric holds US, Zionist Regime responsible for Gemayel's assassination
IRNA
Friday November 24, 2006
Tehran's substitute Friday prayers leader Hojjatoleslam Ahmad Khatami on Friday held the US and the Zionist Regime of Israel responsible for assassination of Lebanese Industry Minister Pierre Gemayel. "All proof and evidence point clearly to the fact that the US and Zionists are behind the assassination because the US State Secretary Condoleezza Rice had earlier disclosed that many assassinations would take place in Lebanon; large amount of weapons have also been shipped to the US Embassy in Lebanon and Gemayel too was assassinated with the same arms," said Khatami in his second Friday prayers sermon... Khatami went on to say, "The reality is that we are witnessing a plot in Lebanon." He hoped such plots would be defused through wise initiatives of the Lebanese popular officials. The cleric said, "True, the plots have been masterminded by foreigners, notably the US, but the enemy is at home." He recalled the 33-day of Lebanese resistance against the Zionist enemy and said there were some Lebanese statesmen who tried to harm the resistance.

Porfirio Diaz, de facto dictator (actually Liberal president) of Mexico, had a pet phrase, "bread or the stick." By this he meant that do what you're told and you eat, otherwise you'll be beaten (or worse). The Iranian people are occupied by Islamofascists, and haven't the means to get rid of them. Uh-oh, sounds like more neocon talk... ;')
