Mary McGill stopped by the California Highway Patrol office in Corte Madera on Wednesday to pick up an accident report about a crash in which she had been arrested on suspicion of drunken driving.
Instead, the 45-year-old Corte Madera woman was arrested once again - on suspicion of drunken driving.
CHP officer Ross Ingels said McGill was taken into custody at the CHP office, at 53 San Clemente Drive, after officers smelled alcohol and recognized other signs of intoxication, including slurred speech.
She failed a sobriety test after having driven her 1995 BMW to the CHP office, police said.
Ingels said it's not often an individual voluntarily shows up at the CHP office under the influence.
"It's not completely unheard of, but it doesn't happen very regularly, either," Ingels said.
McGill dropped by the CHP office about 1:45 p.m. to pick up an incident report about a two-car, non-injury crash Nov. 10 on northbound Highway 101 in which she was driving her 1995 BMW. In that case, she was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving.
After her arrest Wednesday, she was booked at the Marin County jail. The district attorney was expected to file charges Dec. 15, when McGill is scheduled to appear in court for arraignment.
Officials are awaiting toxicology reports that could take as much as two weeks, Ingels said.
Court records indicate McGill was convicted of drunken driving after being arrested by the CHP during an incident in July 1999. The Nov. 10 incident is pending.
World's shortest joke: Two Irishmen walk out of a bar...
The trip was wasted if she didn't get the report. ;o)
Actually, I think she's getting a twofer
in kaliforica she'll do more time for this than if she killed someone.
stupid is as...yatta..yatta..yatta..
Just a point here, and please note that I'm not an advocate of drinking and driving, but they arrested her when she walked into the offices? I would think that waliing while intoxicated is also a crime, but unless an officer actually saw her driving, that a DUI is questionable.
She may have walked into the CHP office, but I would be willing to bet that the CHP officer asked how she came to be present in their office and, being drunk she probably told them she drove down, or let it slip.
Driving an 11 year old car in Marin County is a crime. 10 yr old beemers usually make it across the bridge to Richmond's drug dealers.
Damn! My Maternal Grandmother was named Mary McGiil (Maiden name) and a fine Scots-Irish Girl she was. She was certainly not stupid like this one.
About 20 years ago, a buddy of mine was drinking in the bar, went out to his car in the parking lot and fell asleep. He was woke up by the police and arrested for DUI. He never started or moved the car.
I had a similar experience after bar crawling in Tiburon. After last call, I went out to my car to sleep it off for a few hours and was awoken by the tap, tap, tap of a flashlight on the driver's side window. Forturnately, I wasn't arrested, but I was told I couldn't sleep in my car and would have to move on. Sheesh, just trying to be responsible, 'course if I drove away I would have been busted, so I just walked around for a while, drove home.

Oops! double tap!
In this case, the woman may have representated that she drove there, but without actually seeing her driving, how can the officers cite her? Driving while intoxicated means operating a vehicle, not sitting in it or walking away from it.
That happens in NJ all the time, you're guilty if in a vehicle, regardless of if the vehicle is parked or not. My problem is that the MADD crew is criminalizing something that's actually responsible behavior; sleeping it off in the car rather than driving.
xxxxxxxxx
same in Illinois, guilty for responsible act. Gets real cold in winter here.
I had a friend who beat a rap just like that in NO.
It is if you're waliing too loud!!!
