Gulf Coast News ^ | November 9, 2006

The following is the latest information on casinos reopening on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Open Beau Rivage Resort & Casino opened Aug. 29, 2006, the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. The resort also plans to open a new golf course in autumn 2006. Beau Rivage has new restaurants, a redesigned and more luxurious casino, and the stores along the promenade will look more like a street with each having their own look inside and out. In addition, all of the guest rooms have been redesigned and have a new look.

NEW - Silver Slipper, the Coast's newest casino opened November 9 at 7 p.m. The casino is located in Hancock County at Bayou Caddy west of Waveland. Silver Slippper has more than 1,000 slot machines, 26 table games and 10 poker tables. Restaurants include the Jubilee Buffet, the Blue Bayou Bar and Grill steakhouse and Palm Court Cafe.

Island View Resort in Gulfport is actually what has become of the former Gulfport Grand Casino. The new resort opened for the first time Monday, August 18 at 7 p.m.. The owners of the Copa Casino purchased Harrah's Gulfport Grand property after Hurricane Katrina severely damaged the property and left the Copa's barge on land in a parking lot. The new resort features 30,000 square feet of gaming space, and employs about 800 people, 90 percent of whom are hired locally. The Island View boasts 1,035 slots, a 350-seat buffet, 14-table games and 562 hotel rooms (including 24 suites). The Island View Resort is Gulfport's only casino.

Hollywood Casino in Bay St. Louis opened August 31. It is the former Bay St. Louis Casino Magic. The new resort is similar to the one its parent company, Penn National Gaming, owns in Tunica County.

This is good news for the people of Mississippi. Observe how Governor Hailey Barbour (R-MS) has efficiently rebuilt his state, while neighboring Louisiana, under democrat control, flounders and whines for billions in Federal aid. A "Tale of Two States" as it were...

I'm sure the Gulf casinos won't have any problems finding people to work there, either.

My parents go to Tunica, Mississippi 2 or 3 times a year. Tunica County Mississippi, just south of Memphis, has legal gambling. Tunica Co was the poorest county in Mississippi, so the idea was to put gambling in to bring jobs to the poor, almost all black residents there.

Well, the casinos came in, are still there, and employ thousands of people...mostly white people from Memphis.

What's that story about the leopard and the spots?

Louisiana's Katrina "damage" was the result of Democrat corruption and abuse of federal funds that were intended to be used for building the levee system in New Orleans. In fact New Orleans would have had zero major hurricane damage if not for the corrupt abuse of the levee money.

The real victim of Katrina damage was Mississippi. If you doubt that, take a drive along the coast line. Almost everything for a quarter of a mile inland was wiped away along a 100 mile swath of coastline.

Despite this, you see Mississippi recovering with pride and little complaint but Louisiana liberals keep blaming the government and Republicans for their inability to leach and beg for more government money to misuse.

"Well, the casinos came in, are still there, and employ thousands of people...mostly white people from Memphis."

Not picking on you but in order to work in the gaming industry, you have to pass a fairly in-depth background check and a drug test. This disqualifies a lot of the locals in that area, otherwise it would be pretty much all black.

She may have expected to see more black people but as someone who used to work there, there is no shortage of black people working those casinos.

Love the Beau Rivage

I do, too; it was a beautiful place. I wonder what the reconstructed building looks like.

She probably thought there were fewer blacks than she thought she'd see. Or it might be that the blacks she saw were not locals, but rather people from Memphis.

Or maybe it's just me. Getting old and can't remember what she said.
