PORTLAND, Ore. Dec 2, 2006 (AP) — Authorities said Saturday that new clues in their search for a San Francisco family who went missing a week ago during a vacation in Oregon show no indication of foul play.
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office said a search of James and Kati Kim's credit history showed they had stopped for dinner Nov. 25 in Roseburg, about 160 miles south of Portland and 65 miles northeast of Gold Beach. The Kims and their two children had reservations at a lodge in Gold Beach but never arrived.
"We don't have any indication of foul play," Sgt. Roger Loomis told KATU-TV. "They were in Roseburg, they had dinner and they left, and that's about the only information we have right now."
Someone reported seeing the family's vehicle in the same area as the restaurant, according to the sheriff's office.
The family saw friends in Portland on Nov. 25 and then headed toward home after a Thanksgiving trip to the Pacific Northwest.
Searchers have been combing Oregon highways and byways using snow machines and helicopters. The couple have two children, Penelope, 4, and Sabine, 7 months.
Depends on what you mean by "big." If by that you mean "a few hundred of them spread over the millions of square miles of the American West, then yes, they're big. But I have never heard of them kidnapping a fa,o;u off a public highway and murdering them because one of them was of a different race. Was that what you had in mind?

Supposedly, the weather was so bad at the time it was a "white-out". I have read that there are trecherous drop offs and cliffs in the area.
The situation sounds very bad indeed. Many prayers for this young family.
The weather was horrible at the time ... and the terrain is bad.
The last time this kind of thing happened in LA it was a well liked man in the Hollywood community missing on a drive from Las Vegas to LA. Family and friends searched high and low.
Over a year later he was found in his car having driven into some sort of water culvert ... so some such thing.
I can't remember where but there was a woman a few years ago that made a wrong turn in a snow storm. She was stranded several days but found alive.
One stop at a Denny's on the route they said they were taking on November 26 and that's it.
If were just two adults, they might still be okay. But there's a four year old and a seven month old baby. Doesn't look good.
It's more probable that this is the result of 1) the storm and 2) bad road selection across the Cascade mountain range. No matter how intelligent San Francisco residents may be, they mistakenly believe that the Nature Goddess is their friend - they're very, very wrong.
Unfortunately they do. I think it was about a year ago maybe two a family went missing in Oregon in their RV. The driver saw a road on the map and took it. Locals knew better than to take an RV across it anytime of year. The RV got in a snow storm and the road was closed for the winter. IIRC I think a family member finally had to hike out a considerable distance. It's been too long for me to remember the specifics of it but I remember reading about it. It was national new I think nearly three weeks. No sign of foul play and not to be found.

It look like NWCN has it covered on the Oregon side.
If I remember right - at least one of the highways leading over to the coast have large dead zone areas - making cell phone calls impossible.
As a practical matter, an oriental/caucasian couple is going to be pretty far down on the list of concerns for most racists.

Yes, that does happen. And probably more often than dying in such mishaps.
He was found in the aqueduct on Hwy 14 in Palmdale.
I've been praying for them, too. I hope they are found soon.

The higher areas between where they were last known to be and their hotel for the night are snowbound in the winter. Many of those twisty roads are not maintained during the winter. A couple of families have gone onto a "road they saw on the map" and got trapped. One guy was alone in his camper, and they found him when the weather thawed, about 8 days after he died.
I think it was just last year when a larger group got into trouble in the same manner.
The snow gets deep enough and unaware drivers don't see the signs that state "road not maintained".
