I'd wonder whether a 2m could get out without a repeater in the mountains. Our whole family are hams, we have rigs in every car, but the range is pretty short unless you're willing to go big time with an amp and one of those "schlonk-schlonk" antennas.

We've got 'em, though, just in case they might work. With that and the cell phone it's pretty good coverage. The CB is just 11 meters and not much coverage at all.

Probably not but civil and military receivers would pick up your signal once they launched a rescue effort. Another reason to tell someone where you're going and when you expect to arrive.

Yeah, it wouldn't be anywhere close to perfect, but it would be better than nothing. (Optimally you'd probably want one of those mobile HF rigs, but that's a bit of overkill for most people unless they'd be planning to actually use it on a regular basis.) You might get lucky with the CB though, at least at night. Even with the crappy sunspot cycle, you'd probably get out enough of a signal after dark to get the attention of a random trucker somewhere or something.

What about carrying a PLB if you know you might encounter life-threatening conditions?

Am familiar with the country there. Great people, but not a whole lot of cell coverage out there. Look at a map of highway 140, some of the more remote places here in America.

Prayers for all involved.
