The news conference says they burned their tires at night to stay warm, so I guess nobody saw the smoke.

Not too sure you could do that with the way tyres are made today plus it would use up energy that needs to be preserved. Best just to burn the tyre whole, then use the ashes to write an SOS message in the snow for search teams to spot.
