McCain's New Backer (Trent Lott?)
Townhall ^ | Dec. 9, 2006 | Robert Novak

Posted on 12/10/2006 10:18:20 AM PST by FairOpinion

Newly elected Senate Republican Whip Trent Lott will host a 10 a.m. coffee session for invited Republican guests Tuesday at the Phoenix Park Hotel on Capitol Hill in Washington to discuss Sen. John McCain's impending campaign for president with him and McCain.

Lott, a supply-sider and social conservative, had not been allied with McCain previously. However, in his e-mailed invitation, Lott asserted, "John and I have been friends for many years, and my respect for him is unparalleled." Tuesday's meeting with McCain, Lott said, will "begin to build an organization that focuses not on our differences, but on our shared goals for peace and prosperity for this nation."

A footnote: New York investment banker Ken Langone is hosting a fund-raising cocktail reception for former New York Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani's prospective presidential campaign the evening of Dec. 19 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel ballroom in Manhattan. The price: $2,100 per person and $4,200 per couple.

I will be deeply disappointed if Trent Lott will really support McCain against other GOP candidates.

People who think McCain is the only Republican who can beat Hillary are being conned by the Democrats -- McCain is one of the Republicans Hillary can beat easily. The Dems want the GOP to nominate McCain, precisely because Hillary can beat him.

Get ready for a huge dose of disappointment.

Who ever let Trent out of his cage should be shot.

He is not to be trusted, and I am afraid that this is the beginning of the the anointing of McCain, hence President Democrat,

Thereby proving how agile Lott's "principles" are.

Well, whatever else, Trent Lott knows the participants much closer and better than the rest of us. And it strains imagination to believe that he would not try to pick the strongest possible hillary-beater.

Telling everybody in this forum how much I hate Trent Lott AND John McCain would get me banned.

Trent started out as a Democrat Congressman, then changed to Republican as Mississippi was becoming more conservative.

I have never liked his immature decisions, but when he would not push for conviction for the Clinton impeachment, that did it for me and Trent.

How Mr. Lott has been reelected time after time, has been a topic of conservation on our local radio shows forever. The only thing that we can come up with is that he brings home the pork, and keeps building ships that the military says that is not needed.

You are exactly correct.

I heard Hugh Hewitt say that the drive-by wants McCain as Hillary's opponent so they can beat him up with "mental instability and melonoma (cancer) issues.

The moment Hugh said that .. I knew this is why the drive-by acts slavishly toward McCain.

I knew Lott would be the death of the repubs .. I just knew it. He's such a wishy-washy puke! When are we going to be rid of these prissy boys who allow the dems to drag them around by the nose.

I'm so fed up .. I've become one of the "silent majority" - something I never thought I would be.

Roll Call:

Still, during his more than 30 years in Congress, Lott said he has learned something about how to keep the likes of Coburn from stopping his pet projects from becoming law.

"The way I do it is, I fold them into bills where you can't find it," Lott said. "I've been around here long enough to know how to bury it."

This is the same thinking that got us Bob Dole in 96. "It's his turn."

I'd be surprised if McKook could beat Hillary. I would expect him to self-destruct during the campaign. Or for something to happen that would make people unwilling to vote for him, like a recurrence of his melanoma.

Both Hillary and McCain voted for the 2006 Secure Fence Act, so that's a plus.

Hillary got a score of zero from the Christian Coalition in 2004 and McCain got an 83. I don't think Hillary can beat McCain and the last poll I saw showed either McCain or Guiliani could beat Hillary. Guiliani is too liberal on issues Christians care about.

So, he had enough brain to figure out how to remain on the surface all these years. What makes you think that he suddenly lost it?

Precisely. The Dems discovered that the only way to beat Republicans is to infiltrate them and try to drive decisions from the inside. Right now the chorus is that McCain is the only one who can beat Hillary and many Republicans fall for it, when in fact the opposite is true -- the one Republican that Hillary or any Dem can surely beat is McCain, because they can attack him with the above issues, as well as from both the right and the left.

Oh, please... That was posturing.

Hillary is just left of Marx and Lenin.

McCain pushed through the terrorist rights act and is totally unstable.

I do not get it.... Most people I know are Republican and I would be hard pressed to find someone that likes McCain...What is the Republican leadership thinking? They are so out of touch with the people they are supposed to represent. (IMO)

The only people I know that like McCain are the few Dem's I know...
