PALESTINIAN President Mahmoud Abbas today called for a political solution to resolve a Palestinian crisis but made clear he had the right to sack the Hamas Government.
Mr Abbas, making a much anticipated and lengthy speech on Palestine TV, blamed the governing Hamas movement for a crisis that has renewed fears of civil war. He has yet to comment on whether he would call early elections, a step his aides said he might threaten to take in the speech.
Internal tensions are at their worst in a decade after months of talks between Hamas and Abbas's Fatah on forging a unity government foundered, dashing Palestinian hopes that an end to crippling Western sanctions could be in sight.
The crisis is getting worse ... Without a political agreement, security will remain disturbed, Mr Abbas said.
He also said that he had the authority to dismiss the Government.
This is a constitutional right. I can do it whenever I want, he said.

"Abbas Sacks Hamas"
Who wrote this headline? "The Hollywood Reporter"?
Personally, I'd rather see "Bush Whacks Hamas & Abbas With A Big Attack!"
Hey...what happened to the Hamas "Prime Minister" who Israel prevented from entering Gaza with $35 million in cash? That seemed like a big drama, then we heard nothing. Does that mean Olmert caved?
In rememberance of Abbas, a man who once threatened a more powerful force than he. http://sacredscoop.com
Maybe it means that the MSM doesn't want us to know about it. Today's Baltimore Sun (liberal fishwrap) had nothing noticable about either Rumsfeld's retirement or President Bush's awarding of the Medals to accomplished people like B. B. King. The Washington Times had beautiful and large pictures on pages one and two. People who only read WaPo, Sun, NYT, etc. have no idea of the positive things going on.
Hey media! Here's a civil war. Instead of trying to start one in Iraq why don't you report on an actual one instead?
