Danish police arrest hundreds

Protesters set up blazing barricades in central Copenhagen

Police in Denmark have arrested some 300 demonstrators in the capital, after a protest against the closure of a youth centre turned violent. About 1,000 protesters in Copenhagen threw cobblestones, bottles and fireworks and erected barricades.

Police used tear gas to try to break up the protests, comparing the scene on the streets to that of a "war zone".

The protesters are angry about orders for young squatters to leave a building occupied since 1982.

Local government sold the centre in 2000 and tension has been building since the sale.

"It was extremely violent," police spokesman Flemming Steen Munch said.

"It's been many years since we last had to use tear gas on the streets."

On Thursday, the group had held a peaceful demonstration to try to convince the city council to stop the eviction of the building's occupants.

Left-wing activists have been using the centre as a base for more than two decades.

Danish newspaper Jyllandsposten reported that one demonstrator was unconscious and that two police officers had been taken to hospital.

Just read another article in forum re Danish government forcing tax-payers to foot the bill for the service of prostitutes to the disabled. So these rioters do have an argument, namely, if prostitutes are an important enough human "need" that it must be provided free, why shouldn't shelter, an even more important need, be provided at tax-payer expense as well?

Denmark has raised a spoiled entitlement generation that expects everything to be handed to them free of charge.

Sounds like Giuliani's assault, with police tanks, of Tomkins Square Park in his inugural year as Mayor. It really set the tone from the start that no shenanigans from the far left would be tolerated.

I get your point, although I doubt that will happen sometime soon.

I don't know of any Muslim riot in European history.

The closest thing would probably be the 2005 unrest in Paris and the 2001 riot in Bradford (twin city of Leeds, Yorkshire, England). In these cases, most of the rioters were Muslims but the riot itself didn't have much to do with religion (even though one could always claim Islam instigates this kind of trouble). They can not be compared with the tumult in the Muslim world in connection to the Danish cartoons.
