Selected Civil War Photographs Collection
Library of Congress ^ | Various

Posted on 12/23/2006 5:45:58 PM PST by indcons

The Selected Civil War Photographs Collection contains 1,118 photographs. Most of the images were made under the supervision of Mathew B. Brady, and include scenes of military personnel, preparations for battle, and battle after-effects. The collection also includes portraits of both Confederate and Union officers, and a selection of enlisted men.

An additional two hundred autographed portraits of army and navy officers, politicians, and cultural figures can be seen in the Civil War photograph album, ca. 1861-65. (James Wadsworth Family Papers). The full album pages are displayed as well as the front and verso of each carte de visite, revealing studio logos, addresses, and other imprint information on the approximately twenty photographers represented in the album.

You know, during the American Bicentennial of 1976, a photography magazine (the name escapes me) published a series of photographs taken by a Civil-War-era photographer.

But they were photographs of the still-surviving (this was in 1863) veterans of the War for Independence, all men in their 90s and 100s by then.

If memory serves me correctly, in 1863, there were still twelve of them alive, but two of them in southern states (and hence inaccessible to the photographer).

Anybody even vaguely recall that?

There were also anecdotes and observations of the photographer about each of the men. Apparently he was doing this just before the Battle of Gettysburg, going around, getting these photographs.

Why I remember it in particular is that although these were very ancient men, there was a spirit and animation in their eyes that defies all age.

Probably life magazine.

I do remember that there was a few veterans alive in the early 60's and maybe attended a parade or something

Please add me to your ping list. Thanks!

My g-g-grandfather was a high-ranking civilian in the U.S. Dept of War...his first cousins on his mother's side lived just east of Culpeper...not far from the site of 2 of the photos you posted.

that was the Civil War...

No, it was specifically a photography magazine.

About cameras and somesuch.

Not a newsmagazine, or newsmagazine of photographs.

"Photography Today" or something like that; mostly for camera fanatics; I'm not into taking pictures, and so it was just by sheer random chance that this magazine with this particular article popped onto my lap.

I'm really sorry I never saved it, because it was impressive.

Im sorry, you are refering to the Revolution vets.

I never heard of that, that any pics exist.

But I do remember Civil war vets getting pictures in the early 60's.

What beautiful pictures, and such amazing clarity considering how primitive photography was back then.

Thanks for posting them.
