New Causes for Rachel Corrie's Friends
Arutz Sheva ^ | Dec 27, '06 | Bruce S. Ticker

"I’m here because children everywhere are suffering...." - from speech by a 10-year-old Rachel Corrie.

Children are indeed suffering in many places. So are adults.

Three children were murdered in Rachel Corrie’s “Palestine” on Monday, December 11. Up to 3,200 Arab families could lose their homes to government bulldozers. Two sisters who were evidently Muslim were murdered for their teachings.

If Corrie’s friends in the International Solidarity Movement are looking for a cause, the three incidents listed above amount to a small sample of available causes. The two main problems with this scenario for the ISM is that Jews are not the bad guys in any of these episodes and, as soon as her friends make their presence known, they will likely be slaughtered by the new bad guys. In Israel, the worst they can expect on a conventional basis is to be deported, which could save them from getting themselves killed.

Instead of Jews, the Corrie crew will find themselves defying Hamas, Hizbullah, the Taliban, Egyptian soldiers, Sudanese militia and terrorists in Iraq and Iran. Headlines describing these and other atrocities surfaced within the past week or so, some just hours prior to this writing.

Rachel Corrie’s admirers persist in attempting to immortalize her name, especially with the staging of the play My Name Is Rachel Corrie: Taken from the Writings of Rachel Corrie, in which an actor portraying Corrie recites her many writings before she attempted to block an Israeli bulldozer that ran over her and killed her in Gaza in 2003. (Author Cynthia Ozick studied Corrie’s words for an article published in the December 11th issue of The New Republic.)

The ISM activists' first assignment is to hurry to Gaza City to convince Fatah and Hamas to hold the line on killing each other. The three young boys were shot to death by Arab gunmen who fired 60 bullets into a car carrying the children; their father is a high-level Fatah intelligence official. He already survived a previous assassination attempt. Hamas denies responsibility.

It is feared that open warfare can once again break out between Fatah and Hamas supporters. Surely, Rachel’s friends are anxious to prevent bloodshed among the oppressed Palestinians. After all, the Jews are their common enemy, and the Jews probably hired the gunmen themselves so that their beloved Palestinians would have an excuse to beat one another over the head. That would be the perception of Rachel’s friends, not mine, of course.

Next, they can serve as human shields for colleagues of two teachers, also sisters, who were shot to death just for being teachers, according to the New York Times. Before you folks rush out, you must know that the killers are not Jewish settlers enraged by the teachers' Israel-bashing history lessons. The villains were Taliban maniacs who already warned the sisters that the notion of women leading classes in Afghanistan flouts Islamic law.

If Rachel’s crowd misses the good old days when they blocked bulldozers, then they have their chance once again. But it is Egyptian bulldozers rather than Israeli bulldozers this time. The Times reports that already Egypt demolished 120 houses in the village of Gurna, the community closest to the Valley of the Kings where Turankhamen and other pharaohs were buried.

Gurna is located atop a large necropolis where wealthy and powerful commoners built their painted tombs in the second millennium BCE, and Egypt wants to permit archaeologists to examine the tombs buried there. The villagers have been offered the chance to move to a new area, but the vast majority oppose the resettlement plan because it will cut off their access to the tourists on whom most depend for a living.

Meanwhile, refugees have once again fled their homes because of violence. No, these are not Arabs chased out of the West Bank by Israeli soldiers. They are Buddhists in southern Thailand, and the bad guys are Muslims who likely regard these Buddhists as “infidels,” according to an Associated Press report. Hundreds of Muslims have fled Muslim-dominated villages in three provinces after Buddhist monks and teachers were murdered.

In Darfur, 30 civilians in a rescue convoy were executed by militiamen on horseback, United Nations and aid workers told AP. A UN statement said, “Some of the passengers were shot by the attackers and others were burned to death.”

Then, Rachel’s friends can shield the Lebanese prime minister’s office, stand between the Sunnis and Shiites in Iraq and convince Iran’s president to put away his nuclear war. Their work is cut out for them. Go get ’em.
