New House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (news, bio, voting record) is snuffing out one of Congress' enduring prerogatives, still cherished by some lawmakers the right to smoke near the floor of the House. Pelosi, D-Calif., announced Wednesday that effective immediately, House members would no longer be able to light up in the ornate Speaker's Lobby off the House floor where lawmakers mingle during votes.
The room is often hazy with smoke, as it was Tuesday night as the House voted on anti-terror legislation; Minority Leader John Boehner (news, bio, voting record), R-Ohio, often has cigarette in hand, for example.
"The days of smoke-filled rooms in the United States Capitol are over," Pelosi said. "Medical science has unquestionably established the dangerous effects of secondhand smoke, including an increased risk of cancer and respiratory diseases. I am a firm believer that Congress should lead by example."
Smoke-filled rooms won't be gone entirely lawmakers will still be allowed to smoke in their own offices.
Smoking is banned in most federal buildings, and the District of Columbia recently banned smoking in public areas, as has Pelosi's home district of San Francisco and a number of other cities.
What a joke!
This should win her even more friends, lol.
All you members of Congress and related employees - Grandma Pelosi knows better than you what is best for you.
I'm glad, actually. Congress exempted themselves from the DC smoking ban - let them live under the same laws as everyone else.
Finally the country's most compelling issue has been addressed! We're better off as a nation and a people as a result of this bold move. This should finally result in our getting Bin Laden and winning the war in Iraq. /sarc off.
"(trans fats soon to come)"
But fat trannies will still be welcome.
Go figure...
Oh my - wonder how closet smoker Obama feels about this. They only mentioned a Republican smoker by name. Amazing.
There should be a mechanical sign of her face with that index finger wagging - "Ah, ah, ahh - no smoking!"
Fine with me.
Fine with me.
Yeah, it's also been established that driving a car, flying in an airplane, playing contact sports and eating salt can have dangerous effects as well. When are we gonna get a ban on those?
Mommie Dearest has already decreed which planes they may fly in.
And what would happen if some iconoclast lit up anyway, particularly someone who's vote she needed?
If this is any indication of how the final 64 hours of the second "first 100 hours" is going to go, things should get pretty exciting. I know I'm glued to C-Span.
You guys gave me an idea: let's call her "Grannie Dearest."
Palomino!!!
