Mich. to end race, gender preferences

The University of Michigan announced Wednesday it will comply with a new voter-approved ban on affirmative action and immediately stop considering race and gender in admissions.

The move came in the middle of the admissions process for next fall's freshman class. The university has already begun sending out acceptance and rejection letters.

The state constitutional amendment approved by the voters in November bans the use of race and gender preferences in public university admissions and government hiring and contracting.

After it passed, the university put its admission process on hold and asked the courts that it be given until this summer to comply with the ban, saying it would be too disruptive to change its policies now. But a federal appeals court said no.

"We cannot sustain any further delay in our admissions process without harming our ability to enroll a class of students for the 2007-08 academic year," Teresa A. Sullivan, executive vice president of academic affairs.

The university will continue its legal challenge of the measure in the meantime, Sullivan said.

"This is a big step forward, there's no doubt about it. It's good news," said Terence Pell, president of the Center for Individual Rights, a group that sued to force immediate compliance with the ban. "It's a watershed moment."

The university said it would use other criteria that are not explicitly race- or gender-based to achieve diversity. Those include geographic diversity, the level of education completed by students' parents, and whether students attended a disadvantaged school.

"Those include geographic diversity, the level of education completed by students' parents, and whether students attended a disadvantaged school."

They really want to be sued, don't they.

What in the world does the parents education level have to do with qualifying to enroll in college?

Absolutely nothing.

I don't believe them. Hopefully, a follow-up law criminalizing discrimination based on race or gender or else all the Michigan citizens will get will be lies and more discrimination.

criminalizing discrimination based on race or gender

I thought there was already a federal law.

It's a proxy for race. So is "whether students attended a disadvantaged school."

Surely you don't think that the criteria for entry should be those that predict success at the university? What planet are you on?

Its about darned time! Preferential treatmen based on race, sex, etc. is just as discriminatory and racist as the old "system" it was suppose to end.

Translation: You can lead a responsible life, work hard, go to college, obey the law, have children, sacrifice to save and live in a nice house in a nice maybe not very diverse area. Now your kid will get a rejection letter because UMichigan is accepting someone who's father is in jail for a drive by shooting and who's Mom is a crackhead and lives in the projects and sends the kids to a "disadvantaged school". I guess "Dad" can now say he committed his drive by murder so his kids could get into UMichigan. Nice state.

However, they will give preference to any demographic that votes 90% Democratic.

They would have relented sooner if we had some nifty protest slogans like liberals try to come up with. Such as:

"Affirmative action's no solution,
all it is is retribution."

"geographic diversity, the level of education completed by students' parents, and whether students attended a disadvantaged school..." and whether your ancestors lived in mud huts and communicated by drums.
Universities get more laughable by the year.

Hooray! This is truly progress and great news for a fellow like me! In the past, I was afraid they had rejected my application to law school (LSAT score of 170 coupled with a 3.65 GPA) merely because I am a male person of pallor. However, they now have compelling reasons to reject my application: my parents went to Jesuit and Lutheran universities and I hail from red-state flyover country!

"The university said it would use other criteria that are not explicitly race- or gender-based to achieve diversity. "

This is simply "code". The elitists of academia will STILL see to it that they admit and offer free scholarships to the desired number of under qualified blacks, browns, reds and females -- by simply using and twisting criteria that will discriminate against your Caucasian or Asian son.

I wonder how the assholes in Academia would react if the "State" attempted to ENSURE DIVERSITY within University Faculty -- by assuring an appropriate ratio of Conservative, Christian, REPUBLICANS, Former Military, or Real world experienced Professors who have actually earned a living DOING what they teach, etc, etc, etc...

I'd bet granny's Rum bearing cow they wouldn't consider that a proper application of achieving "DIVERSITY"....

The objective of "diversity" is simply an excuse for allowing the lowering of standards to the lowest common denominator... DUMBING down society - to make better Democrats.

A POX on all their phony lying Marxist elitest asses.

The US Supreme Court disagrees.
They said that race or gender considerations couldn't be a predominant factor, but could be considered. It took a state constitutional amendment to clarify it, apparently.

Federal laws prohibit discrimination based on a person's national origin, race, gender, color, disability, religion, or familial status. This law has been upheld by the Supreme Court.

The law that was struck down was affirmative action in education. The use of race or ethnic background as a discriminator was ruled unconstitutional.
