California's Post-Partisan Depression

California continues its tumble into the economic sea. In his Inaugural Address, the Governator promised a "post-partisan" world, but we see evidence of some post-partisan depression. His first big initiative is a proposal for universal health coverage. As part of this sweeping and enormously expensive proposal, he will require all businesses with 10 or more employees to offer insurance to their workers or pay 4 percent of their payroll into a state fund.

Schwarzenegger is going in the exact wrong direction to achieve lower health care costs. See ShopFloor.org for more information.

4% payroll tax. This is the only solution I keep hearing about. Raise the payroll tax, like this sea of money is a vast and untapped resource. If I were a small business in Cali I'd leave in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, this will soon be coming to every state when the Democrats demand all employers big or small supply health insurance.

I was thinking if I had 11 employees and this action applied to 10 or more--- two people are going to lose their jobs.

Or become independent contractors. Next thing will happen is the small businesses with 9 or less employees will be demanded to supply health insurance or pay the State dole for those 'less fortunate'. Either way is is confiscation of money. We all know how well State run insurance works.

No more partisanship. We're all communists now.

If I was an employer I'd reduce payroll by 5% and then pay the 4%. And I'd surely be looking to reduce the number of employees or restrict hours and overtime. Can you say robotic automation, boys and girls?

My guess is that the State will determnine the adequacy of any private insurance plan with some kind of minimum standards. There is no way you could pay for adequate medical insurance with only 4% of your payroll.

Conservatives should look on the positive side. This may result in leaner and more efficient businesses.
