"OKLAHOMA CITY (Reuters) - Seven Mexican nationals were killed early on Sunday in Oklahoma when their minivan skidded into a tractor-trailer truck in icy conditions, police said."

Very sad, to be sure, when 7 people are killed, but could someone clarify this for me? Is the phrase "Mexican nationals" the new euphemism for "illegal aliens"?

"Mexican nationals" means they are Mexican citizens, it doesn't address their status in the U.S.
I'd be willing to make a small wager that they were illegals though.

do you think they are illegal or just on vacation? Based on my time in Texas...if they were on vacation/visiting family, they license plates on the van would be from Mexico. It's unlikely, they would rent a car from the U.S. Anything things possible, I guess. However, I suspect if their license is from the U.S., they are illegal. But I haven't heard anything about their tags....

My ex-girlfriend was involved in 3 auto accidents in the last few years, and in each case, the drivers were illegal aliens (well, 2 of the 3... The third was a hit and run, but my ex says that they "looked mexican").

They're just doing the accidents Americans don't want to do.
This will all be fixed by the McCain-Kennedy-Bush comprehensive traffic reform legislation.
A recent study of a rapid rise of pedestrian traffic deaths in the Washington DC area was attributed to the "cultural differences" of the large hispanic population.

I think you see more stories like this because they are making national headlines. A few years ago most incidents involving Mexicans or illegals in the U.S. were just local news.
7 deaths in one accident would make big news no matter who or where they were from though.
