Ron Paul Explores Presidentian run in 2008
Florida Sportsman ^ | 1/13/2007

Rep. Ron Paul has been hailed by many as the "only true conservative" left in the U.S. Congress, and he perhaps has one of the largest grassroots followings of any U.S. Representative.

Rep. Paul has now formed an exploratory committee to seek the GOP nomination for President of the United States in 2008.

There is an unconfirmed rumor around the net that he will tap Tom Tancredo to be his running mate.

Some conservatives say this could be the "dream team." Both men have very large grassroots support and both oppose the third-world invasion of the United States.

A paleolibertarian (and Libertarian Party presidential nominee, 1988), Ron Paul has recently become (according to some) more of a "paleoconservative" or "conservative Constitutionalist."

Ron Paul is a harsh critic of immigration amnesty, and he outright opposes the third-world invasion of America. He is a member of Tom Tancredo's Immigration Reform Caucus.

Paul was only one of six Republicans to vote against the war in Iraq. He foresaw the disaster it would become, and was not afraid to say so, even though it was unpopular at the time. Ron Paul also has voted against the Patriot Act in 2001 and again in 2005, and strongly endorses American withdrawal from the United Nations.

Ron Paul has been unafraid to criticize the neocon Bush Administration, and has been highly critical of their excessive spending. Paul professes a limited government. His regular votes against almost all proposals for government spending, initiatives, or taxes, and his frequent dissents in otherwise unanimous votes have irritated some of his Republican colleagues and have earned him the nickname "Dr. No" (an example being his dissenting vote in the socialist No Child Left Behind Act where he was one of three Representatives voting against it).

Rep. Ron Paul has been highly critical of the NAFTA Superhighway, and has co-sponsored legislation to end its construction. Although previously in favor of free trade, he has more recently become skeptical of it.

Historically, conservatives have opposed free trade, because they say it destroys the economy and erodes national sovereignty.

" Although previously in favor of free trade, he has more recently become skeptical of it."

The auther of the blog post is a little confused here. Ron Paul has always been and remains in favor of genuine Free Trade. He has also always been and still is sceptical of globally managed trade, ala NAFTA, WTO etc., masking itself as Free Trade. This is a distinction that needs to be made more often.

'There is an unconfirmed rumor around the net that he will tap Tom Tancredo to be his running mate.

That would be an interesting pair.

"...and he perhaps has one of the largest grassroots followings of any U.S. Representative."

He is quite popular among the small "l" libertarians as well as the big "L" ones. He also has the support of a large number of constitutionalists and paleoconservatives. Although I have my doubts as to whether he could actually win, I wiould love to see him in the debates. The best case scenario is that a Ron Paul candidacy creates a grass roots movement to reconnect conservatism to its limited government roots ala Barry Goldwater.

I'll be happy if ANY conservatives jump into the 2008 race.

To actual conservatives they would be known as the "in your dreams" team.

Forget Tancredo, he should add Newt. They would be an awesome pair!

"both oppose the third-world invasion of the United States." ..............Unfortunately the third world invaders will probably get to vote against them.

I would vote for Lindsay Lohan for President before I would vote for Ron Paul.

Win, lose or draw, he just moved the all of the GOP candidates and their debate to the right. This is a very good thing.

He is for freeing gay marriage, no federal protection for the unborn, legalized recreational drugs etc. He has abandonded the troops and the president too many times for me. I have lost faith in Ron Paul but it's no worry because he won't win.

"Tancredo and I wanna know what you believe."

I am not sure that I understand your question. I support a Ron Paul candidacy because I believe that he might be able force the issue of constitutionally limited government into the public debate. I do not believe he can win, but I do think that he cold revive a conservative movement centered on a commitment to strictly limited government. The last Presidential candidate we had who was anywhere near as serious as Ron Paul about constitutionally limiting government was Barry Goldwater. His campaign gave birth to a grass roots conservative movement. That movement has now gone off the track and it needs another Goldwater like leader to bring it back on track. As for the Tom Tancredo as VP part, it is a rumor I heard. This rumor makes sense to me as both are mavericks who are shunned by the party establishment.

Win, lose or draw, he just moved the all of the GOP candidates and their debate to the right.

(1) He moved nothing, since he is a completely marginal figure whose base is confined to a small coterie of cranks.

(2) if he had enough electoral influence to actually create movement it would not be to the right, but to the left.

A backstabber of US troops is not to the right of his party.
