...the layoffs are about restructuring our editorial staffs as we move quickly into a future of flexible, multiplatorm content creation.

Well at least TIME hasn't lost its knack for blatant bullsh&t.

It will only get worse for the editorial staff that were laid off because I've heard minimum wage jobs will be drying up soon. Maybe they should have backed the Right side in November...

It will be a small loss if it folds altogether.

That's actually the point, isn't it. A few people would have to find other jobs, but that would be balanced by the social good of having a net reduction in the level of error in the public discourse. Overwhelmingly, no one would notice, or care.

I read it. From what I've read about the Consolidation of Bereaus at People Magazine, Do you think the Magazine is in Meltdown?

I'm not in a position to know. I do think that People is a victim of its own "success", in that when it started in the 70s it was a new type of magazine format, and since then it has been very widely imitated, which dilutes the market. Not that I am shedding any tears over it, which I refer to as "Peephole".

"As Thomas Sowell would put it - their skills and labor can now be put to more efficient use for the economy in general."

Unfortunately, they'll probably go work for the government...or simply happily cash those unemployment checks.

Fewer copies of this stuff means I can't use discarded copies to wipe up oil spills in the garage any more?

That's very true. And in order for People to compete, They had to go tabloid as well. Perhaps, People Magazine will set off a chain reaction throughout the whole of Time Warner's Magazine holdings.

"Overwhelmingly, no one would notice, or care."

Except for those diehards who have been loyal to the magazine through thick and thin. They will feel lost for a few weeks but then they will find another love, hopefully not as deceitful.

I was just looking at the covers of several issues of the magazine at our office. Each one had a headline that bashed Bush directly or indirectly. Sickening. Even in its death-throes, it must lash out at others.
