PHOENIX (AP) - More than a foot of snow fell on parts of northern Arizona, and several more inches were possible Monday, while children as far south as Tucson got a rare chance to play in the snow as one of the strongest storms of the winter moved through the state.
Sunday's storm came amid a wave of winter storms that have brought snow, ice and strong winds to the Plains region, but also to the Southwest, including Arizona, Texas and New Mexico.
The harsh, frigid conditions were blamed for 11 traffic fatalities in the Plains over the weekend.
Although the heaviest snowfall in Arizona on Sunday was in the north, snow also fell in downtown Phoenix and Tucson, which received up to 1 1/2 inches, according to the National Weather Service.

Rare Storm or storm of rare snow?
Global warming? I wonder if there was some convention here last night that Al Gore was supposed to attend.
I'm in Tucson and we've got a good inch of snow across the entire town. And it is staying quite well and is still below freezing. Nearly all the bridges over washes are iced over so people can't go to school or work. Unfortunately for me, we still have school at 12. I'll probably be one of a very few students who will actually travel for an hour and a half to attend two hours of school.
I thought that holding global warming conferences during times of freak cold and snow was the kind of stupidity that was reserved only for Al Gore. I'm disappointed that Bush is doing it now, too.
I saw Mort Kondrache claiming that all this weird weather is the result of global warming, and pointing out that even Bush is now on board with doing something about it. I personally don't see how a severe winter snow storm can be the result of global warming.
Faced with cold weather like this I have noticed that some liberals want to abandon the term "Global Warming" and use "Climate Change" instead. That way they can ascribe every incident of "extreme" weather, hot or cold, to climate change caused by the evil Republicans.

Back in the 70s everything was about the coming ice age.
That was when the lead environmental whacko was blaming it on aerosol sprays. So we stopped using them Now the air is cleaner and the same guy is a global warming alarmist.
Interesting. Before we had the proper snow, we had similar stuff. We'd have little snow showers amidst the rain and then rain and finally it started snowing quite heavily. At first i didn't believe it really was snowing. I just moved here from Tennessee yet it snowed far more than i had seen in tennessee for years. So much for the warm winters.
Global warming advocates have models that predict any outcome you might imagine. This is key to their bad science. A theory that predicts every outcome is worthless and cannot be tested.

Apprently although school is officially open from 12 to 2:50 all the faculty and students have ditched. :) So I am too. Now I have an official complete snow day in Tucson, AZ. Maybe getting a little warmer might be good actually.
Fort Huachuca, Arizona is CLOSED because of the snow.
I heard that they had several inches in Phoenix, but it of course melted as it hit the ground.
While it's a little unusual in Phoenix, a foot of snow in Northern Arizona is not uncommon at all... The Northern part of the state is quite high. There was a few feet on the ground in Show Low when I was born in April.
