TIJUANA, Mexico -- The police department has issued about 60 slingshots to officers in the violent border city of Tijuana, where soldiers confiscated police weapons two weeks ago on allegations of collusion with drug traffickers.
Municipal police spokesman Fernando Bojorquez said Monday that the slingshots, along with bags of ballbearings, were given to officers patrolling areas of the city visited by tourists.

Tijuana's police force of 2,000 officers has been without guns since Jan. 5, but some patrol alongside armed state police.
President Felipe Calderon sent 3,300 soldiers and federal police to Tijuana at the beginning of January to hunt down drug gangs. The soldiers swept police stations and took officers' guns for inspection amid allegations by federal investigators that a corrupt network of officers supports smugglers who traffic drugs into the U.S. The weapons are still being checked.
About 100 police demonstrated outside Tijuana town hall on Monday demanding the return of their guns. "The arms are our tools for work," said officer Juan Manuel Nieves. "Do they want more police to be killed?"

Just when you think you have heard it all....
If they did, don't underestimate the power of a slingshot. I have seen one fire a steel ball the size of a .50 caliber bullet through the door of a car.

My preferred ammo in my younger days was .44 cal lead balls. Definitely potentially lethal if a head shot, and I'm sure not much fun anywhere else.
Hey--I'm not dismissing the slingshot or the good people at WAMMO Corp.
But a .38 or 9mm it ain't.
I know this is a serious story, but still, the visual of one of the big fellas on the Tijuana municipal force with a slingshot sticking out his back pocket is just funny.
Right--what's the deal. Imagine this with the , say, LA or Chicago PD.
Goliath did (underestimated the power of a slingshot) but shouldn't have.
Maybe they should be issued some harsh language as well.
Sling Shots can be very deadly. They are silent, do not produce a muzzle flash, can be concealed w/o much problem, and there is an unlimited amount of ammunition.
I had a wrist sling shot as a kid and could kill a rabbit at 30 yards with just one of my store bought marbles. Gave it up when my dad bought me a .22 with a 20 round clip. Guns were just so much cooler.
I've a wrist rocket for squirrel control. Regardless of the projectile velocity, fumbling around with a wrist rocket and a sack of ball bearings is no way to confront a criminal. You're dead before you can get the thing loaded.
Don't knock slingshots. This guy used it to savethe world from MAD.
Any word if the standard issue model will have laser sights and come with a suitable bandolier?
The Tiajunna police need new beebers ping...8^)
Their old beebers must have been stuned!
This is series...
...and could be HUGH
Now we know how they will break up the shows...IF they exist!
Definitely HUGH--assuming they exist...
