In a shocker to naysaying pundits who predicted a Bush bomb last night, the POTUS pulled off his strongest State of the Union address yet. ("Confident" and "relaxed" seems to be the general consensus.) But his nonverbal cues told a different story, says renowned body language expert Patti Wood, author of Success Signals.
George W. Bush, she says, was positively seething.
"He still did his little sticking out his tongue thingI stopped counting at about 50," Wood says, adding that the gesture is a sign of passive aggression in most people. "It says, 'I want to hit you, but I can't because there are people watching.'"
Then there's the the tongue-thrusting, sour-puss wearing Madam Speaker Nancy Pelosi. "The fact that she did not control her emotions says how strongly she feels about Bush."
And the blinking, good God, the blinkingup to 70 blinks a minute ("Normal is 23," says Wood.) Was that Morse Code? (Watch the clip, above.) "I think part of it was that she was wearing false eyelashes, but it typically means nervousness."
After the jump, Wood's minute-by-minute analysis of what the faces and gestures of Bush, Pelosi, and Condi Rice were really saying.
Body language is WAY overblown, IMHO.
Yes. Considerably less here than meets the eye, especially Wood's eye.
Angry Republican = BAD.
Angry Democrat = GOOD.
Y'see.
Is this the loon that appears on Bill O'Reilly now and then?
I would normally write this kind of article off as B.S., but that one has got to be true.
Can't say I blame Bush for wanting to smack the crap out of the likes of Pelosi, Kennedy, Reid, Kerry, Schumer and the rest of our so-called sniveling leaders of defeat.
Boy, roger that. That woman is total BS. She would be more convincing if she purported to see the future by throwing blood, chicken bones and Ju-Ju beans on the ground and reading the signs.
I could make up the same kind of stuff. It's like modern art: you don't really have to have any talent or skill, just a great line of BS.
The practice of Modern Art is no better or worse than the Classics.
The difference is that, in previous times people coalesced around a work and said, "That is awful garbage!" And it was thrown out.
In modern art, the garbage is hailed as "affected by affliction," and revered for its failings by the pernicious art critics.
So the garbage never gets weeded out.
the man is on the money, unfortunately the rest of america who voted miss the point.
the dems? any argument against bush for whatever hes doing. Only they have one problem. None of their "stuff" is contigious and coherent. They are just a dog and pony show of opposition.... opposition to whatever is opposite to bush positions.... with nothing better to offer.
It's a valid science, but it's something that can't be "Done by the book."
I've seen it on O'Reilly, and these people aren't taking other variables into account. For example: What did Bush have to eat that day?
I lick my lips when they feel dry. I believe most people would.
Pelosi was literally biting her tongue. She was actually chewing on it. That gesture was obvious. Under what circumstances would people do that, and what would the variables be? There aren't too many other circumstances or variables to chewing a tongue like a piece of tofu. She was struggling to remain silent. There's no doubt about that.
Clinton used to bite his lip - constantly! By the book, that means everything he said was just the opposite of what he meant. That's true, but he used it obviously. Therefore, it's not a sub conscience gesture, so it doesn't count. He did it on purpose. So what else accompanied it? Clinton, contrary to "the book", used it as a distraction more than a method of self control. When a person lies, they look to the left, for example. The biting of the lip was a conscience distraction in case he screwed up and looked to the left. Clinton understands body language. That's what makes him a good politician (and actor). He was able deceive the many. He still uses it today.
The thirty second clip of the address that I saw last night was hilarious. The Pelosi : Cheney eye blink ratio must have been somewhere around a hundred to one.
When Bush said no one voted for defeat, her eyes darted across the room. My husband and I cracked up. She was taking names. She was especially interested in the Republican response. That one really got to her. She sooooo wanted Bush to stop talking. Voters were listening!
Took daughter to MOMA in NYC during the holidays. Thankfully they had some wonderful impressionists on display. As for the rest....most people were having a good snicker. One young man said out loud.....did they commission a third grader for that painting?
I notice a lot of laura ingraham sucking up to O'Reilly these days. She's his favorite guest host so I guess she'd best tow his line of bull to get invited back.
