Courts mixed on voter ID

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- U.S. courts are giving mixed reviews to new voter identification laws that keep some people from the polls.

USA Today says courts in Georgia and Missouri have rejected laws that required voters to show photo ID each time they cast ballots. In Indiana, however, a federal appeals court upheld a state photo ID law.

The Georgia law required people to show one of six government-issued forms of photo identification. Previously, state polling places had accepted non-photo ID as proof of residency.

Missouri's requirement that registered voters show a state or federal photo ID to cast a ballot was struck down by judges who said it was "an illegal hurdle for poor, elderly and disabled residents," the newspaper said.

Earlier this month in Indiana, a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit rejected claims by state Democrats that the law violates voting rights.

Judge Richard Posner upheld the law but said "most people who don't have photo ID are low on the economic ladder and ... are more likely to vote for Democratic than Republican candidates."

If you don't have a photo ID, you'd better not have a television or a bottle of Jack Daniel's.

You can't afford either.

What is the problem with showing an ID?

Now days, you have to show ID to cash a check -- what? your money is more important than who's running things?

People need to just grow up.

Showing an ID at the polls is too late, they need to repeal the idiotic "motor voter" laws that make it very easy for non-citizens to register to vote.

So NONE of those people ever cash a check, drive a car, or buy beer/cigarettes, enter a bar, fly on an airplane, or go to Canada or Mexico?

Very suspicious. I'm not buying it.

That's a lie IMO.... I don't care how old or poor you are you have some form of ID... unless you are one of the illegals that left your ID behind before coming here (they do it so if they are stopped there is no proof they are not citizens).

The "Courts" have to go WAAAAAAY out of common sense to come up with the conclusion that requiring an ID somehow constitutes a poll tax...given that you need an ID to purchase beer, drive a car, or cash a check.

I live in GA, and recently tried to get a Voter ID card.
I can't.
Voter ID cards are ONLY for people who demonstrate they have no other forms of photo ID (trying to prove a negative?).
As such, I have to show some other form of ID, which frankly is none of their business - I'm _voting_, not driving, not passing international boundaries, not carrying a concealed weapon, etc.

If they're going to require photo ID, then they need to provide it.

(Yes, I have the same problem with using a driver's license for anything other than driving-related issues.)

It certainly is not a poll tax, as (at least in GA) they'll GIVE you a photo ID if you don't have any.

"...new voter identification laws that keep some people from the polls."

I thought that was the POINT of voter ID laws - to keep "some" people from the polls:
criminals, illegal aliens, those voting multiple times, the dead...

"Showing an ID at the polls is too late, they need to repeal the idiotic "motor voter" laws that make it very easy for non-citizens to register to vote."

That would be a nice start.

Then if only we could enact laws that kept the criminally insane and the feeble-minded from voting, the Dimocrats would lose their two biggest voting blocs!

When the (legal) residents signed up for motot voter, they obtained a driver's license. There is NO hardship case in making them present it at the polls.

Heck, if Gore can make us pay an FCC tax for low income individuals to get "the internet", they can get an official piece of plastic with their picture on it.

Countries that implement national IDs, time and again thru history, end up oppressing their people.

Maine is telling the feds to take their Real ID law and shove it - precisely because it makes things so freakin difficult, and does nothing to improve security overall.

New York checks voters by signature. Simple, works. No commandeering other 4th-Amendment-protected papers.

Don't tell me I need an ID to do something, and then not give me one. My other IDs are none of your dang business.
