By Payton Hoegh

(CNSNews.com) - A Virginia delegate introduced legislation this week proposing a holiday to celebrate the end of slavery as an alternative to an official apology that he refuses to support.

Seventy-nine-year-old Republican Frank Hargrove drew criticism nationwide when he said that "black citizens should just get over it," when speaking out against a bill that proposed an official apology from the Commonwealth of Virginia for its part in slavery.

"Slavery's over with. It was a horrible institution," Hargrove said. "There's nobody living today that approved of it."

These comments, along with his related rhetorical question as to whether the Jews should apologize for killing Christ, have stirred up controversy and criticism over the past week, which culminated with black leaders confronting Hargrove over his insensitivity.

How about free drinks for descendants of slaves and of slaveholders, so they have a big party and reconcile?

You mean like making "June-teenth" a legal holiday in VA?

Declare Juneteenth a national holiday, in addition to MLK Day?

Do I get to take the day off too?
My family was in Italy at the time but I am sure they were repressed too.

"How about free drinks for descendants of slaves and of slaveholders, so they have a big party and reconcile?"

Hmmm. That'd be like me and two friends showing up at a Jackson State/Grambling game.

My family wasn't involved in the slave trade. I believe we helped them to Canada... therefore I expect reimbursement from those slaves who they'd helped at their own expense.

He apologized on behalf of the federal government. He did not apologize on behalf of the Democratic Party.

I would say that an apology would not be enough in the case of the Democrats. They need to pay reparations.

Who knows who is which?
Just exactly how does one separate the descendents of slaves from the descendents of black slave owners? Is it the same way that the descendents of white slave owners are separated from the descendents of white abolionists?

Why bother with an apology? I doubt if an apology would suffice. I can imagine if someone publicly "apologized" for slavery the next thing you'd hear is "did he REALLY" mean it?" "was it genuine or did he make the apology to get us off his back"

One other thing. My guess it's not really an apology they are after, but cash...

This'll be another holiday that only gets celebrated in schools, by banks, and by gov't employees.

The rest of us that actually work for a living, will just get harangued for not being 'diverse' enough by those that actually have something to celebrate.
