CARACAS, Venezuela - Hugo Chavez has just about everything a president could want: popular support, a marginalized opposition, congress firmly on his side and a booming economy as he starts his new six-year term.

Now, he's about to become even more powerful — the all-Chavista National Assembly is poised to approve a "mother law" as early as Wednesday enabling him to remake society by presidential decree. In its latest draft, the law would allow Chavez to dictate measures for 18 months in 11 broad areas, from the "economic and social sphere" to the "transformation of state institutions."

Showing more and more of how he continues to form his dictatorship. Hitler once had a law like this, it was called "The Enabling Act" of course it was only supposed to be temporary, until it passed that is.

If the GOP Congress had passed a "mother law" allowing President Bush to transform American society on a whim, the Left would be screaming about a dictatorship. But they say nothing when Hugo Chavez in Venezuela gets dictatorial powers to do over his country.

This is prime popcorn time for Vennie watchers. Sit back and enjoy Titanic head towards the iceberg.

It will actually be interesting to see the dynamics of this process. I'll be interested enough to keep a close eye on how the Vennie economy reacts to each of Chevez's moves.

Hugo Ping

Venzuela descends further into what may be a long nightmare. I pray and hope that the nightmare is short and that Hugo's days of power shall come to a swift end...

Chavez is working with the Chinese on this one. If they can keep his oil flowing, this may not be as disastrous for Chavez as we might like.

Chavez didn't even have to burn down the Reichstag to do it.

How is it possible that after the 20th century's record of totalitarian states that led inevitably to mass murder, people still willingly sign themselves into slavery?

Carter certified the elections were honest. Everything is ok.

Mark Steyn wrote that given a choice between freedom and goverment security, people overwhelmingly prefer the latter. With life increasingly stressful and complicated, its human nature to want to be relieved of many of the onerous responsibilities that accompany it. And for a lot of people, the loss of their precious freedom is the last thing they notice.

It's nice to know that some things never change and are the same regardless of geographical boundaries! The American MSM/Left has always felt their plans fail because they weren't spending enough money on them or the wrong person was running it, never once considering the possibility that maybe, just maybe, they fail because they are not sound ideas to start with! Now we find the same thing holds true in South America!

Have at it guys and if you want some idea of how your little paradise is going to work out in the end look no farther than Cuba!

Just give them their sports on the weekend, american idol, and a flickering TV to keep them in a daze and they'll be fine.

The MSM once again shows it true colors. To them the fact that Chavez has "Oil Wealth" is not a negative. Any American company that has oil wealth is constantly attacked by the MSM and referred to as "Oil Barrons, Oil Tycoons, or "BIG OIL". The bias is disgusting. I can't help but get the feeling that they wish the USA has "President" like Chavez. But I guess thats nothing new.
