I have to recommend Orson Scott Card's "Pastwatch" at this point, if only for the observation within that human slavery, while distasteful, was actually better than what it replaced: human sacrifice. Somewhere, sometime along the way in history, someone figured out that it was a waste to kill all the prisoners and captives of war with other tribes and states. They could be useful if alive.
It's interesting to note that the Americas had no slavery before the Europeans and Africans came over. Before that, they just killed everyone.

I believe at least one tribe in the Pacific NW kept slaves.

It's been a long time since I did work in pre-Columbian North American 'history' but I seem to recall various cultures did have slavery, it not in the more highly organized forms it later developed. Obviously, in a culture of smallish bands, slavery will be relatively informal and possibly inchoate.

The Africans had a suplus of slaves, and, until they started selling them to Europeans, disposed of this surplus by killing them.
They were not very curious what we doing with the slaves either; they suspected we might be eating them - and didn't care.

Nope. Indians kept slaves and raided for women. Toltecs, Aztecs, etc. were fond of slaves, too.
The most interesin' bunch, however, were the Caribes of Florida and the Caribbean - they kept slaves in pens as livestock, fattening them up to eat...
