In some states, over half the inventory of houses listed for sale stand vacant. No cars in the driveway. Nobody tends the garden. Squatters are now moving in and living in vacant houses purchased by would be house flippers. Once squatters move in and get established, it is very difficult to have them evicted. Because squatters seek free legal aid from the county to fight evictions.

Squatters live without paying rent and they often have money to pay their attorneys expenses and court costs. Squatters may live for free in many states for over a year. Here is a movie trailer for a new film on the subject:

Squatters

In the meantime, foreclosures are booming. Thousands and thousands of potential buyers may be bargain shopping HUD lists tomorrow. Others have been making a fortune easy as pie flipping houses bought during some stage of the foreclosure process.

By the end of this year, all this will change. Storm clouds may be seen on the horizon. Watch what happens?

True tale of squatters.

Guy I know found out squatters were occupying a house he was trying to sell, in No. Kalifornia.

It took several weeks to get an order evicting them.
The sheriff's deputies politely told them to get out, placed all their belongings on the side-walk in front of the house, and left.
Within fifteen minutes the squatters were back in the house!

When the owner tried to get them evicted again, he was told he would have to get a new court order.

He mentioned the problem to a friend, who is a member of the H.A. motorcycle club.
Some club members paid a visit to the squatters, and very impolitely told them to GET THE "F" OUT!
They then placed most of their belongings into a commercial wood chipper, explaining that a similar fate could happen to them if they returned to the house.

No more problem with squatters at that house.

Sometimes the most effective solution to a problem requires working outside the box.

I am curious, do these squatters live without electricity, etc.? In my area I don't think they would be able to have electricity turned on once the owner has stopped the service. I see some in the video carrying water in jugs.

Doesn't the law in some states allow squatters to OWN a house once they live in it for a certain amount of time?

Sickening!

Why do I get the idea that this would be fatal in Texas? Squatter = burglar.

A house I worked on stood vacant for over six months and the contractor was in the process of going belly up. He hadn't visited the property in several months and when he got a water bill for over $2000.00 he figured there was a problem. The furnace quit working and two water pipes froze and burst. The resulting mold growth was incredible and the sheet rock on the first floor and basement along with all of the insulation and wiring, the water heater, air to air exchanger, and furnace had to be removed and replaced. The bank repossessed the house and had to sell it at auction so the next contractor could fix it up and try to sell it.

The real estate market in the Twin Cities has gone South also but such is life in the free market. This boom has been going since about 92' and when an average person cannot afford the mortgage to buy a house the market will naturally adjust itself.

I realize that I'm coming late to this thread, but why would you bother seeking an eviction for a squatter, who has no right to occupy the dwelling?

You show up with a gun, tell them they are trespassing and to get the hell out.
