Venezuela's Chavez says government could nationalize supermarkets, food storage facilities

CARACAS, Venezuela: President Hugo Chavez threatened Wednesday to nationalize any privately owned supermarkets and food storage facilities caught hoarding inventories or violating price controls imposed on basic goods.

Accusing private companies of hoarding foods such as beef, Chavez warned supermarket owners and distributors that he would nationalize their facilities as soon as they gave him "an excuse" to seize such assets.

"If they remain committed to violating the interests of the people, the constitution, the laws, I'm going to take the food storage units, corner stores, supermarkets and nationalize them," Chavez said during a televised broadcast. "So prepare yourselves!"

Chavez has been intent on nationalizing "strategic" sectors of the economy since winning re-election in December. He's moved quickly to buy out private interests in leading electricity and phone companies since the all-Chavista National Assembly gave him authority to enact sweeping measures by decree and accelerate the country's socialist transformation.

Welcome to the 21st century socialism. We're different from the 20th century socialism. We have one more number on our name.

I'm not surprised.... Venezuelans will wake up in a Communist dictatorship. But they voted for it and they will have to live with it.

The next step is herding the peasants into collective farms under the watchful eye of the Party.

People get the government they deserve.

Open up the ballot box to just anybody and this is what happens.

Its happening here as well, just more slowly.

But they voted for it and they will have to live with it.

Agreed. They had a chance to rid themselves of this little two-bit tyrant and they let it slip through their fingers.

But I fear that it will be our kids that will have to free the Venezuelan people in the not so distant future.

When private property is no longer secure, the inevitable result is tyranny. Venezuela's oil reserves can't help it escape from being the wasteland Cuba is today. No wonder Hugo wants to imitate Fidel's example. Its less concern for his people's welfare that motivates his socialist policies than it is with making himself Lider Maximo for life.

Spare me. It's not our business. The Bennies should sit back and enjoy...no more gringo man to interfere.

It's not our business.

I'd say it's our business, considering the amount of oil we get from Venezuela. That and Hugo's aligning himself with every enemy of the US he can.

Time will tell.

It will happen very quickly here when 20+ million illegals are made "legal" with a wave of Jorges magic wand.

Does anyone really think they'll vote R ?

Does anyone also think that a majority of illegals will vote "conservative"? A giant influx of illegals here not only harms the Republican Party long-term, but it also harms the conservative movement long-term! I can't believe all of the Republicans who are still for amnesty for illegal immigrants, including President Bush! What are they thinking? How does cheap labor also equal the majority of Hispanic voters voting for the Republican Party and voting for conservative politicians from now on? It doesn't make any sense!

Been a telling anyone who would listen and not laugh that this was going to happen.

For all those who think he will not invade Colombia at some future point just remember what was being said when Chavez came into office.

Our State Department along with congress has totally screwed up the situation down in South America for Americas interest.

Some of the diplomats I knew back in Bogota were so naivete about what was coming down the track over across the border that it was laughable.

Congress tied our hands when it came to helping Colombia fight the Communist guerrillas by capping America troop levels Oops.. advisor's allowed in the country.

The Northern part of South America is a hot bed of cut throat militia groups.

These guys do not play fair, especially with anyone getting in their way.

It was not uncommon to see Americans in civvies walking the streets of Cartagena and find out they were contractors for some CIA oops...security firm working in the bush.

America better wake up as Chavez is the vessel that is carrying the Communist water of dissension for the likes of Almanutjobadine of Iran and many other low life scum bags in the region.

These guys down there remind me of many left wing hypocritical naivete (Nancy Peloser) liberals here in America.

Another words, willing to do what ever it takes to justify the end result.

Life has a value of about 500,000 (230 dollars) Colombian Pesos.

That is what it costs to get somebody dead as a door nail, so to speak.

" I'd say it's our business, considering the amount of oil we get from Venezuela. That and Hugo's aligning himself with every enemy of the US he can. "

The Venezuela-Iran-Russia triumvirate controls enough of the world's oil supply to challenge OPEC for control of the worldwide oil market...

This leads me to not a few quite unsettling speculations....

I've Family in Venezuela and it hurts to see what Hugo is doing. His "armed militia" far outnumbers the organized military. And it's basically composed of a criminal element.

Spreading it to surrounding countries too....

And he's created a pestilence that will be a pain in the tuckus to take down. Like the Swiss style "militia" gone wild.

Venezuela once was what Chile has become. General Pinochet,
for any faults, stabalized Chile like a stern Father.

As for Hugo the Monkey, GoldstateGOP" got it right...Venezolanos missed their chance when he packed baggage and wanted to scoot. They should have "shoot".

Jim Reeves once sang "He'll have to go"..
