Ms. Ali, who was born into a Muslim family in Somalia, collaborated with filmmaker Theo van Gogh on the movie Submission, which takes a critical look at the treatment of women in Islamic societies. Mr. Van Gogh was murdered in Amsterdam in November 2004 by a Muslim man who was offended by the movie.
