N.Y. Times Jan. Revenue Dips on Weak Performances From New England, Regional Media Groups
NEW YORK (AP) -- The New York Times Co., which owns newspapers, broadcast outlets and Web sites, said Wednesday that January sales slipped 0.4 percent on weakness at its New England and regional media groups. Ad sales from continuing operations fell 2.1 percent to $182.6 million from $186.5 million in the prior-year period. Total revenue from continuing operations declined to $288 million from $289.1 million.
Revenue increased 0.6 percent at the company's New York Times group on growth in financial services, advocacy, hotel, international fashion and book advertising. Ad revenue declined 9.7 percent at the New England group, in part due to consolidation of its two largest department store advertisers. Regional media ad sales fell 6.5 percent. Internet ad sales for all three media groups climbed 26.2 percent on growth in display and classified advertising. Combined, the news media group saw its ad revenue slip 2.9 percent to $174.6 million.
The company said in September that it is selling its broadcast media group.
About.com, a news and information Web site, saw its January ad revenue surge 22.5 percent to $8 million.
Revenue from subscriptions gained 1.8 percent to $85 million.
"There was a land of Publishers and Editors called the Newspaper Business... Here in this pretty world Journalism took its last bow... Here was the last ever to be seen of Reporters and their Enablers, of Anonymous Sources and of Stringers... Look for it only in books, for it is no more than a dream remembered. A Civilization Gone With the Wind..."
With apologies to Margaret Mitchell...

Don't know why anyone would buy NYT, let alone get NYT.
Even though I cancelled my subscription 4 months ago..it's still being delivered, though I have not been billed. I can tell you fromfrist hand observation that the daily papers have almost NO advertising..and the number of pages is way down. I can tell by the weight when I pick it up each morning..
It's called a dead cat bounce.

I've been getting offers for FREE delivery of the Denver Post, Rocky Mountain News, and the (Boulder) Daily Camera. I just laugh at the hucksters and tell them I don't trust their craft anymore, that journalism is a disgrace, and I call their employers facetious liars. I gotta admit my glee when I calmly and politely tell these people what douchebags they are right to their face.
Good news. Justice comes in many forms. My dog has refused to poop on the NYT for a long time.
Look! It's Ashley Wilkes!
This talk radio host who I detest, Mike McConnell was ranting the other day about how we won't like a world in which the big news gathering organizations die, so we need to go out and subscribe to a newspaper. I thought that that would be a nice thought if these organizations actually gathered news instead of pure-d-crap. Out of the ashes perhaps a new world of journalizm will arise. For now, journalizts are lower down than judges, lawyers, and insurance adjusters.
You may be on to something.
You're getting the papers for free because they have to keep their circulation numbers up. Their numbers determine what they can charge for advertising. These numbers are audited by independent firms so they can't lie about them.
No one is buying their papers, so they have to give them away. The same holds true with magazines.
This is true. At one time I was receiving a magazine that I enjoyed. I started getting two per month, later three, then four.
This went on for more than a year and then it started declining until I was back to receiving just one.
They should have sold the rag and kept the broadcast media group.
Who would buy it?

Those Maureen Dowd columns are riveting (sarc). Although I have to say I'm really liking Molly Ivins' current work a lot more.
