A thinking conservative would have gotten the context of the criminalization of the word "faggot" (it's been in the news) and would have realized -- especially since Edwards is not gay -- that it is a joke.
A stupid (pretend) conservative would just jump in with both feet and self-righteous anger.
Especially if they are pea green with envy that their words carry no weight anywhere. (Except maybe around the food service cart.)

As for everyone arguing that others say nasty things, well, like my mother would argue "if the other kids jumped off a cliff, does that make it OK?"
