Foot-and-mouth outbreak confirmed in N. Korea: official

SEOUL, March, 8 (Yonhap) -- The global animal health body has confirmed a foot-and-mouth outbreak in North Korea and South Korea has boosted quarantine steps at the border, a Seoul official said Thursday.

"The outbreak was first reported at a farm near Pyongyang on Feb. 7, affecting more than 2,000 cows and pigs," said Kim Chang-seob, the chief veterinary officer at the Agriculture Ministry. "The World Organization for Animal Health confirmed the outbreak as of Wednesday."

It is the first time that the health body confirmed a foot-and-mouth case in the communist country, he added.

Well, at least the quaruntine won't be too much of a hardship on the rest of the world. They don't really have much of a tourist trade.

Oh crap. Food's already pretty tight up there, this might push a lot of people who's diet is already marginal into starvation.

I was just thinking, do you suppose that this has anything to do with the UN pulling out all their workers?

A scary situation for all of the SANE North Koreans. And believe me, there are quite a few of them.

Foot and mouth disease in North Korea, I was expecting a satire on their leadership before I realized the thread meant hoof and mouth disease.

Prayers for the people of North Korea - you are right, this is a very scary situation for a people already starving. How I wish that Kim Il Jong was gone, that we might be able to aid the North Koreans without abetting their evil dictator...

Escaped from one of their bio-war labs? I'll bet there will be a lot of scrutiny of the strain involved.

no kidding I thought that their politicians had caught a case of Foot in Mouth disease (ala Dan Quayle) which for US politicos tends to result in unemployment, wonder if it causes loss of head in communist countries.
