To Duncan Hunter, China is cause for alarm
San Diego Union-Tribune ^ | 3/11/07 | Finlay Lewis

Republican presidential candidate Duncan Hunter's insistent warnings about China's military buildup have stamped him as the Paul Revere of the fast-developing 2008 campaign.

China is picking America's pocket and using its ill-gotten gains to acquire ships, planes and missiles in a challenge to U.S. national interests, Hunter said. By cheating at trade, China also has been able to pirate many U.S. industries and high-paying manufacturing jobs, said Hunter, a 14-term congressman.

AdvertisementSome experts say the Alpine Republican's relentless focus on Beijing's trade tactics is overwrought and ignores important economic benefits to the United States, including hundreds of billions of dollars' worth of Chinese loans that help the United States finance its deficit. Campaigning for the GOP presidential nomination over the past three months, Hunter has espoused a view on China that is far more confrontational and alarmist than the one taken by the administration of President Bush.

For example, Hunter has accused China of illegal currency manipulation that he said is seriously damaging the U.S. economy. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke is guilty of “appeasement” for failing to challenge China's currency policy, Hunter said.

China is reminiscent of WW2 Japan. It should be alarming to us as they build up their military and use our enemies through proxy. Duncan Hunter is ahead of many who want to turn their heads at what we are facing in regards to China in the not to distant future.

The 17% increase in chinese spending equates to the 17% increase of americans buying chinese goods. We have met the enemy and they are us.

Henry Hyde has endorsed Duncan Hunter

I know JC Watts has been saying great things about Hunter on different political shows and saying Hunter is one to watch so maybe JC can come forward with an endorsement! How about a Hunter/Watts ticket?

Hunter has no chance in the presidential lottery in '08. Get used to the idea; the media says our choices are Hitlery, Edwards, Barry Obama, Rudy and McCain. Find the one you hate the least and go vote.

China slaps us across the face on a regular basis and Mexico treats us like their boy. Is it any wonder Russia feels comfortable acting with increasing belligerence?

It's just amazing how stupid Americans can get when a President named Clinton can authorize transfer of MIRV technology and other sensitive military technologies to China. And there is no clamor for a treason prosecution. And for others in that administration

This is called "hidden in plain sight" treason

I like Duncan Hunter, but he doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of winning a general election.

He'd make a good VP choice though.

It's business as usual as Republicans were too timid to call them out on it.

I beg to differ. You admit you like him. When people actually see and hear and know about him, they like him. He's likeable, he exudes leadership, he's the best to lead our country in these challenging times. He would run an awesome campaign and it would be nice to see the Demonrats confronted on their typical propaganda as too many Republicans just sit back and let it continue. Hunter has a way of saying things and just gets to the point. America needs Hunter.

I agree with your assesment. I don't see him getting the nomination, but I hope that one of the others would pick him as VP so we can at least have a conservative in 4 or 8 years.

Well known veteran Congressman, Henry Hyde, has endorsed Duncan Hunter for President. Hyde, a longtime representative from Illinois, calls Hunter one of the most qualified candidates he has seen in his long and illustrious career. “I proudly support my good friend and fellow public servant, Duncan Hunter, for the office of President of the United States,” said Hyde. “Duncan Hunter brings a wealth of experience, great foreign and domestic knowledge, and an energetic spirit to this race for the White House. I like his chances, and I like his platform a lot,” noted Hyde.

At this point we can't even count on so called friendly nations. When the Swiss decided they didn't agree with our war in Iraq the stopped selling us the guidance systems for some of our missiles. We're lucky there's still one company in this country that could take up the slack.

Steel is another serious problem.

You're not actually suggesting Republicans should let the media (87% self-defining as liberals, according to a Freedom Forum poll during the previous administration) choose who will and who will not be the Republican candidate??

Can FreeRepublic choose the Democrat nominee while we're doing things that way?

Can I decide which women will have dinner with me, also?

Oh, and I'd like to choose which stocks go up this week.
