John McCain, formerly the leading Republican presidential contender, has told The Sunday Telegraph that restoring America's sullied reputation abroad will be "a top priority" if he wins the White House.
Of America's poor image abroad, even with long-time allies, Sen McCain acknowledged candidly: "It is a very dispiriting situation and I know we will have to work hard to improve it."
In a sign that he wants to distance himself from the president - to whom he lost in an ugly campaign in 2000 - Sen McCain outlined a series of measures to roll back Bush policies and counter the "ugly American" image.
"I would immediately close Guantanamo Bay, move all the prisoners to Fort Leavenworth (an army base in Kansas) and truly expedite the judicial proceedings in their cases," he said. "I would reaffirm my commitment to address the issue of climate change and greenhouse gas emissions. I know how important this is in Europe in particular."

Proving once again that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

About the only good thing I can say about mcstain is, at least he's reliable, as in always wrong.
And thus may it ever be.
The best thing McCain could do to help restore America's reputation would be to resign his office immediately and then permanently retire from public view.

Oh geez.... I have no love for McCain, but seeing him get tarred and feathered for declaring an issue a "tarbaby" is just ridiculous.
Name calling is the most juvenile of offenses to be worked up about. People need to grow up.
I think he's really losing it, I doubt that position will get him many Repub votes.

While Ramesh Ponnuru makes a compelling case for giving McCain a fair look, and a year is a lifetime in politics, I still think McCain has about the same chance of taking that oath of office as I do. I sense zero interest in his candidacy among my conservative bretheren. If a Republican can win without conservative enthusiasm, he can also walk on water.
This is good. I lose a lot of sleep worrying what we can do to give the world a favorable opinion of us.
He thinking of running as a demokkkrat??
Gee, that's really wonderful. We'll be so much better off by emulating Europe.
HELLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOO!
Why don't you actually READ the excerpt I posted?
This has nothing to do with the tarbaby comment.
This has to do with McCain SELLING OUT THE US to the world hoping that if we grovel in front of them, they may feel sorry enough for us to let us live.
In case anyone needs a McReminder...open the above http...for some McGrins.
Straight talk McCain? I don't think anyone believes that McCain is a straight talker except maybe his bus driver. What's with these naive Brits?
I'm so glad he doesn't stand a snoball's chance of ever being POTUS.
I was going to say you forgot the barf alert, but I see "McCain" is already in the title.
