BAY AREA: 57 arrests, including ex-defense official, at anti-war rallies

4th anniversary brings out protesters; 45 booked as 'die-in' blocks traffic at busy S.F. intersection --

San Francisco police arrested 57 anti-war activists in the city Monday as demonstrations were held throughout the Bay Area to mark the fourth anniversary of the U.S. war in Iraq.

The bulk of the arrests -- 45 -- were made shortly before 1 p.m. at the intersection of Montgomery and Market Streets, when protesters moved their sidewalk "die-in" to the middle of Market Street.

Blocking noontime traffic, activists sprawled out like war casualties. Some shrouded themselves under sheets with fake blood, and others chose a pose more befitting of a coffin, on their backs with closed eyes and clasping flowers to their chests. None resisted arrest.

Among those escorted to three police vans was a woman in a wheelchair, a woman in a nun's habit and former Department of Defense official Daniel Ellsberg.

Ellsberg became famous for leaking the classified Pentagon Papers documents to the New York Times in 1971 that revealed the U.S. government had engaged in a pattern of deceiving the public about the number of Vietnam war casualties and the nation's ability to win the conflict.

"I spent this same day in jail in D.C. during 'shock and awe' four years ago, and I'm sorry to say that I did expect the war would still be going on this long," said Ellsberg, 75, moments after his release from San Francisco County Jail, where activists were cited and released.

Protesters were arrested for failing to obey a traffic officer, a misdemeanor, and blocking a traffic lane, an infraction, said San Francisco police Sgt. Steve Mannina.

Several other protests were held Monday around the Bay Area.

Activists at Chevron Corp. in San Ramon said they were protesting "Chevron's role in driving the Iraqiwar...

People lie in the middle of Market Street during a "die-in" to protest the Iraq war.

Oh for Heaven's sake! After all these years, these meatheads are still relying on the "die-in" gambit?

I have a suggestion: They should try the "leave the country" gambit. Doing so would really beautify America.

Why don't they just spray them with water hoses?? That would get them out of the road.

Water hoses... maybe a few attack dogs. The protesters and the MSM would be overcome with nostalgia.

Perhaps some "black ops" are needed on these traitors.

I can't think of a few things that would make these traitors miserable during their commie sit-ins.

I devote most of my political activity to making my political enemies miserable. There is no reason why they should go the entire day without someone reminding them how wrong they are.

Police dogs.

Trained to "mark territory" every six feet or so.

That, or charge the water hoses with the contents of a pig-farm sewage lagoon.

A real die-in would have some freak screaming "Allah Akbar!" and setting off bombs or hosing them with gunfire.

....I know this is a bit off
topic, but....

Did any of you who watched
the YouTube clip, of the
"lost" Anti-War protestor
thatwalked into the GoE
crowd, and after some terse
words and a little aggro
from one woman, until she
was backed off by other Eagles...

That guy...he just came off
phony to me...like he wasn't
a real protestor, but a Fed,
or more than just your regular
gutter hippie pig agitator...

Am i alone in this?

I guess nothing else was happening in San Francisco.

Oh, just crime, violence, political corruption. Nothing that would interest the media. ;)

I actually proposed this to a pair of police officers in SF who were watching the ACTUP protesters going up onto the traffic lanes of the bay bridge."No one would get hurt and everyone would go home"They just looked at me incredulously. This was about 10 years ago.

These lefties are given a free pass.Cited and released. The judge ought to give them all 30 days and community service after that.Abortion protesters GO TO JAIL.Of course, jailing lefties would create whole new movements.Free the SF 57...

Last night on '24' weren't you all hoping the nuke made it to SF? We'd be better off without that city.

Since I live in Oakland, let's say I have mixed feelings. But you're wrong,we need SF.This is the showcase of the Democrat Party.Mainstream Americans wouldn't believe it if they didn't see it with their own eyes.Just watching the mayor's shennanigans is worth the price of admission.

I tend to think they would run from water more quickly than from bullets.

I mean, water to a hippie is like crosses to a vampire.
