ANNAPOLIS - State Republicans said yesterday the Democratic-controlled General Assembly is using cost as an excuse to kill a bill that would keep illegal aliens from getting a Maryland driver's license. "That's something the opponents are running," said Delegate Ronald A. George, Anne Arundel County Republican and sponsor of the House bill. The proposal would have brought Maryland in compliance with the federal Real ID Act, which requires drivers to prove they legally live in the United States before being granted a driver's license. However, the House and Senate appear ready to kill the measure.

If Maryland does not comply with the act, state driver's licenses would no longer be accepted identification for entrance into federal buildings or travel on airplanes.
If I do not have legal ID to get into the federal courthouse, do I still have to show up for jury duty?
"Critics say the plan will cost the state $150 million and increase the cost of a Maryland driver's license to $190."

How does it cost the state to require someone provide proof of legal residency to get a driver's license? Seems that the onus is on the applicant. You don't come with your documents, you don't get a license.
I've read this in the past, and still cannot figure out where the increased cost comes in. Every 5 years, in order to renew our MD driver's license, we need to have an eye exam, either signed by an optomotrist or tested at DMV. Can't see where it would add any cost to have the DMV employee check your birth certificate (or naturalization papers) at the same time.
Figures lie and liars figure.
So, go figure :)
