Montclair resident Barbara Webster, a self-employed bookkeeper representing Montclair Campaign for Peace and Justice, was one of five anti-war protesters arrested yesterday in Newark, for staging a peaceful sit-in in the Gateway Center lobby where US Senators Frank Lautenberg and Robert Menendez have offices.
Webster, 64, tells Baristanet the protest is part of a nationwide effort to stop further funding of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. "Our goal was to camp out in the senator's office until he signed the pledge we delivered last week, or until the office closed and they called the police to get us out. We expected to get arrested." Webster said.

"Police seize 5 war protesters"
Wednesday, March 28, 2007
BY WAYNE WOOLLEY
Star-Ledger Staff
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Five opponents of the Iraq war were arrested in Newark yesterday after sitting on the floor for 40 minutes in the lobby of the building where U.S. Sens. Frank Lautenberg and Robert Menendez have offices.
The activists -- all members of the anti-war New Jersey Occupation Project -- last week had asked the senators, both Democrats, to sign a pledge to vote against a $100 billion spending measure that pays for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan."

Can I put on a WWI spike helmet and run through the banners with my head down? Sounds like a fun filled day to me!
'"a self-employed bookkeeper"'
Even worse is she's 64 years old.How does someone live that long and STAY stupid?
I'm bringing a partial list of the dead at the World Trade Center.
I spent a discouraging hour at the Montclair protest. There were hundreds of them, stretching for probably ten blocks. Cars honked, presumably in support. They were reasonably well organized, well behaved and groomed.
There were a number of t-shirts for Blue Wave. They seemed to be the organizers. There were a number of other t-shirts/organizations represented. One mother/young daughter sported peace sign t-shirts.
I spoke to a couple of them, who were coherent and reasoned. One had been at another protest in Bloomfield earler today.
I asked one, if Iraq is the wrong way per her poster, what was the right way? She said peace. However, when I asked her to be more specific, she was rational, even though I disagree with her.
There were a couple of reporters, from the Montclair Times and the Star Ledger. They weren't interested in doing much reporting, from what I saw.
I didn't see anybody from our side. There were a couple of guys smoking cigars who might have been sympathetic. There was one young man on a bicycle who was yelling Bush at a protester - I couldn't tell if he was serious before he rode off.
I read from my list of WTC dead and seemed to get a little bit of attention as I walked down the street.
These folks will win the propaganda war, if today is any indication. Barbara Webster may be a "pinko-commie-hippie-leftover", but she got a whole bunch of people to spend their afternoon in Montclair with her.
