Dobson: Thompson must express faith
POSTED: 4:57 a.m. EDT, March 30, 2007
But a declaration of Thompson's religion will not be enough for Dobson, who is viewed as being widely influential with evangelical Christians, a key Republican voting bloc.
"We were pleased to learn from his spokesperson that Sen. Thompson professes to be a believer," said Nima Reza, a Dobson spokeswoman. "Thompson hasn't clearly communicated his religious faith, and many evangelical Christians might find this a barrier to supporting him."
...
Dobson has shown so far he's not a believer in any of the front-running Republican candidates. He gave Mitt Romney a lukewarm review and said he couldn't support Sen. John McCain or frontrunner Rudy Giuliani. It signals a split among evangelicals.
"They're looking for someone to head off Rudy Giuliani. Some evangelicals want Thompson to be that person. But others want Newt Gingrich," said Dr. Charles Dunn of Regent University.
Dobson recently had Gingrich, the former Speaker of the House, on his radio show, where the former house speaker admitted an extramarital affair.
"I asked you if the rumors were true that you were in an affair with a woman, obviously, who wasn't your wife at the same time that Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky were having their escapade?" Dobson asked.
"Well, the fact is the honest answer is yes," Gingrich said.
Dobson has not endorsed any candidates. He told "U.S. News & World Report" that he thinks Gingrich is the "brightest guy out there" and "the most articulate politician on the scene today."

Well, the Dobson bashers should be along to run this thread into the hundreds.
At least you posted a popular topic! :)
Probably a new one every time a new published story is released. How many 9-11/WTC stories from different sources were posted here?
Hillary professed her faith, go support her Dobson.
Why does Dobson have any clout to endorse anyone? Just because one is overtly or mildly religous has nothing to do with what kind of a job they can do leading our country.
We cannot single out one narrow minded opinion as a determining factor in what will be the only qualification reviewed when selecting leadership.
Granted, religion is an important consideration but by no means should be a deal breaker.
This is true, Newt is the most brilliant, conservative voice out there, BUT all the baggage he would carry into any election doom him from the start. The Defeatocrats haven't forgotten he led the charge against Slick Willie, and they won't give that a rest 24/7 if he does run and win the nomination.
Thompson must be perceived by the MSM as a very threatening candidate as there have been numerous hit pieces, and he's not even announced!
I was just saying that after 4 threads, how much more can be said in regards to the bashing of Dr. Dobson.
I've counted 21 threads and 21,000 postings on Dobson's quote regarding Fred Thompson ;-0
At least the title of this thread is legitimate.
I'm not a Dobson basher, I'm not a Dobson follower. I am a Christian and I don't think we need somebody to make a "declaration of their fatih to be the President." (that worked real well with "born again" Jimmy Carter, BTW. Sarcasm, of course.)
Anyhoo, I do find it quite offensive that Dobson supports Newt Gingrich (see last paragraph in the article.) Gingrich, whose been married three times, and left two of his wives under "questionable" circumstances.
I heard Dobson interview him on the radio, and found it absurd that he'd give Gingrich the opportunity to "explain" how his two divorces came about.
James chapter 2 comes to mind: A man can say he has faith, but if his deeds prove otherwise...
I'm not choosing a new successor to Christ. I do care about the person's values and what they've done in the past. Go, Fred, go.
I'm confused. Maybe I just never was paying attention, but where has Newt Gingrich made a major address about his religious beliefs or the need for a savior? Not that I expected him to do so as a candidate, but Dobson appears to think candidates should.
I never thought of Newt as a terribly religious man, I guess because his actions did not strike me as those of a man who was following Christ, or who was sorry about them (realising we are all sinners, the question is how you respond to your sin).
Then exchange it for any other topic in the news... "Iranians Capture Brit Soldiers" "Blair Outraged At Iranian Action" "Iran Stands By It's Decision" "UN Does Nothing To Help British Soldiers" etc
Absolutely. It's an attempt to create hostility toward both men. Ignore it.
LOL. Good one!!
Maybe Fred should start carrying a Bible and singing in the choir on TV like Slick did.
I totally misunderestimated the popularity of this subject. 21,000 postings and still Freepers will have more to say...
I sure hope Thompson doesn't submit to Dobson. If I was Thompson and I was a Christian I still wouldn't want to jump through any Dobsonian hoops.
But Newt kissed the ring. Thompson has not.
It's BS
I check the candidates voting record--that is the best litmus test on issues that I need to see to know they are moral.
I can't do anything about your "offense." You are welcomed to it of course.
I'm a Hunter supporter, so until both Gingrich and Thompson declare their candidacy, it matters very little to me what anyone thinks about them.
