Dozens feared dead in Solomon Islands tsunami

Guardian Unlimited (UK)

Dozens of people were feared dead today in the Solomon Islands after an undersea earthquake caused a powerful tsunami to sweep across the low-lying South Pacific nation. The quake, and a series of aftershocks, prompted a tsunami alert across much of the Pacific region, with beaches closed and ferries cancelled as far away as Sydney amid fears of a disaster on the scale of the Indian Ocean tsunami of December 2004, which killed more than 250,000 people.

Although the alert elsewhere was scaled back as the danger period passed, the death toll in the Solomons - thus far confirmed at around 13 - was expected to rise significantly. The quake, measuring 8.0 on the Richter scale, sent a wall of water five metres high crashing over coastal villages in the west of the island nation, some of which were feared completely washed away.

At least 13 people were confirmed killed in and around Gizo, a popular tourist and diving town on a small island to the north-west of Guadalcanal, home to the country's capital, Honiara. A hospital was among the buildings reported damaged. Local officials warned they were still waiting for casualty figures from more remote areas.

"Reports have come in that more than 15 people died, just around Gizo, but with the other islands I cannot tell you," Alex Lokopio, premier of the Solomons' Western Province, which includes Gizo, told Radio New Zealand.

Is it me or did we really go a long time without any tsunamis? I really don't recall hearing of any until that big one a couple years ago, and now this one. Was I just not paying attention?

I think there was a six inch one in Japan a short while back.

Seems like before the big one, I never heard of any hitting anywhere. Course, if they were 6 inchers, too, I doubt anyone would have noticed.

It's the Bilderberger group. They keep siphoning the water off and then flush it.

It's not you ... they are more FREQUENT and STRONGER.

1) There was an unusually long and flukey period between the last long-range teletsunami (1964) and 2004.

2) Simple attention affect and the rise of global media. There were a number of deadly local tsunamis betwen 1964 and 2004 in places like Nicaragua, New Guinea, etc. that killed hundreds and even thousands of people that went totally unnoticed. Similar tsunami now get massive coverage.

I disagree. I've read differently elsewhere.

In general, catastrophes are happening more and more costly in human life and dollars. The U.S. is also experiencing that phenonomom.

“The earthquake caused 40 million cubic yards of rock weighing 90 million tons to slide from the northeastern side of Gilbert Inlet from an average height of 2,00 feet with dimensions of 2,400 to 3000 feet and an average thickness of 300 feet. The slide forced the water out as a surge up to a colossal height of 1720 feet, 400 feet higher than the Empire State Building, onto the opposite shore, stripping the trees from the forests to that level. This was not a true tsunami wave as it was not a true wave and its velocity depended on the kinetic energy from the slide. The water forced down Gilbert Inlet formed a true tsunami.”

[to repeat]

“a colossal height of 1720 feet, 400 feet higher than the Empire State Building”
