Russia sternly warns US not to push through Kosovo independence plan

MOSCOW-Russia's U.N. envoy on Wednesday warned the United States against trying to put a Western-backed independence plan for Kosovo to a vote, saying it would split the U.N. Security Council and create deadlock on the issue.

Vitaly Churkin said Russia continues to strongly oppose the plan proposed by U.N. special envoy Martti Ahtissari that would give independence to Kosovo, which has been a U.N. protectorate since 1999.

Churkin warned that Russia, which is a permanent member of the Security Council with veto power, was prepared to take any action necessary to block the plan, although he stopped short of saying that Moscow would veto the proposal.....

"Showdown at the UN Corral" -- and for what? So that Albanian Muslims can steal 15% of Christian Serbia's territory?

I hate to say it but Russia is right in this. Why the hell our government is gung-ho "Albanian Muslims" enough to risk this kind of international conflict in the Security Council is beyond all reason. It's insane.

At the time of the illegal NATO bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999 when Martti Ahtisaari was the President of Finland, his government sought to commemorate and to honor Finland’s Nazi SS volunteers from the Holocaust.

This may explain his hatred for those damn Serbs who just won’t die.

Our government’s behavior in this matter is shameful. Frankly, I support the Russian position and I hope they stand firm and make Bush back down. But I don’t think they will. I think they are just posturing and don’t really care one bit about Serbia or its people.

I echo your sentiment, if Russia was truly interested in Serbia’s interests she would have done more much earlier. However, I must qualify my statement to say that the Russian boots on the ground do care.

Yes, it is amazing if we continue to wrongly claim that it was Russians who commanded the Soviet system. But as we all know now, the Russian people suffered disproportionately under the Soviet Communist system, a horror show created, developed, and maintained by many many non Russians.

Whoohoo!!! I was hoping Russia would stand up for the Slavs.

It’s only rhetoric, I know, but it’s nice to see someone throwing some support behind the Serbs.

It is most likely Russian rhetoric, but for the sake of the remaining Serbs in Kosovo, I pray to God that it is not. Because otherwise, all 100,000 of them are goners.

I can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic or serious...

But yeah, Stalin wasn’t Russian, he was Georgian, and communism was invented in the west, not the east. Marx, a German, got his ideas from British socialists who wrote on the subject, and then wanted it to take hold in Russia. Not to say Russians are innocent, because they certainly aren’t—too many of them bought into communism and forced it upon the lives of people, and founded the USSR in the first place (Lenin).

I was just saying it’s unusual that the US would take the wrong side on this issue, while the Russians, ruled by the ex-KGB Putin, would take the right one.

Sorry I wasn’t more clear...I’m serious of course since I have actually read Russian history.

Let me just add to my previous statement.

Fact: those of Russian ethnicity are the ones who suffered the most during this hideous Soviet system.

Clarification: Lenin a Russian? His ethnicity is a mixed bag of German and jewish as well...certainly as much as there is if one is Russian. Read about him in LENIN by Robert Service. Read some Solzhenitsyn too.

I echo your sentiment, if Russia was truly interested in Serbia’s interests she would have done more much earlier.

In 1999 Russia was very weak and the countries in between blocked the potential transports.

Yet Russians managed to arrange compromise in which Russian and NATO troops under UN supervision were to occupy only Kosovo for a limited time. After stabilization Serbian administration was to be restored. The West did not keep the deal.

Why give land to peoples who want to kill us and destroy our way of life?

Why do Clinton and Bush work against the Serbs?

.....and communism was invented in the west, not the east. Marx, a German, got his ideas from British socialists who wrote on the subject, and then wanted it to take hold in Russia......

You forgot to mention that Soviet revolution was bankrolled by American bankers. It was not a Russian revolution at all.

It was an American import. It can be seen from the list of Politburo members from 1917 until Stalin purges. Only token Russians. For paltry $20M, investors got 10 000 destroyed Christian churches and over 20 000 000 000 people killed and starved to death. The mass scale destruction of Christian schrines and mass terror in Kosovo under NATO occupation thus has historical precedent. One who pays the piper choses the music.

Communism, the worst scourge of the 20th Century, was an American import.

The second worst, Nazism, was aided, abetted, armed and prepared by American banks and American businesses (J.P. Morgan, Ford, GM, Dupont, IBM und so weite)

Serbs suffered heavily from both. As a thank you note for saving 500 American and 100 Allied flyboys, Serbia got savagelly bombed on Easter Sunday of 1944 by USAAF. Bombing of Serbia continued until September 1944 and helped Communists gain control of Serbia. American support to Albanian Islamofascism thus has a strong precedent. Having in mind that Albanians were the hard core Nazis during WWII and hard core Communists after WWII make them understandable recipients of U.S. grace.

A split sort of like when Russia votes against sanctions on Iran, North Korea, Sudan,etc.......? Hypocritical mutts.

Each great power tries to maintain and expand its sphere of influence. Each and every one, no exception. It is like the laws of thermodynamics.

If you forget the rhetoric/ideology/words spoken on all sides for a moment and look for the balance and interplay of power the image of the world will get much clearer.

Now there are some differences, for example if you are weaker you will try to use legal means and wit, if you are stronger you will go for use of force more willingly. If you have systems of checks and balances at home it will make your external policies less sure, if you concentrate power your base might weaken in long term etc ...
