Excerpt -

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The suspected head of the U.S. branch of Sri Lankan rebel group the Tamil Tigers was arrested in New York on Wednesday and charged with providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization.

Karunakaran Kandasamy could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted, prosecutors at the federal court in the New York borough of Brooklyn said.

As the director of the U.S. branch of the Tamil Tigers, which is based in Queens, New York, Kandasamy oversaw the organization's activities, including its fund-raising, prosecutors said.

The rebels, known officially as the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, or LTTE, have been fighting for decades for an independent homeland on the north and east of the teardrop-shaped island in the Indian Ocean.

What is it about Queens that attracts terrorists (even b-list ones)?

Tamil Tigers are no b-listers. They've killed two Prime Ministers, they invented and perfected the individual suicide bomb vest, and have probably killed more people than Al Quaeda, Hezbollah, or Hamas.

Just because something doesn't make the news networks in the US doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

Point taken. Forgot about their involvement in the Gandhi assassination.

Rajiv Gandhi's last public meeting was at Sriperumbudur on May 21, 1991, in a village approximately 30-miles from Chennai, where he was assassinated while campaigning for the Sriperumbudur Lok Sabha Congress candidate Mrs Maragatham Chandrasekhar in Tamil Nadu. [6] The assassination was carried out by the LTTE suicide bomber Thenmuli Rajaratnam also known as Dhanu.
