The Massachusetts Institute of Technology said Thursday that admissions dean Marilee Jones — a crusader for reducing the anxiety around college admissions — has resigned for misrepresenting her academic credentials to the university.

Jones, dean since 1997, has been a highly visible campaigner for reforming the college admissions process. She issued a statement saying she had misrepresented her credentials when she first came to work at MIT 28 years ago and "did not have the courage to correct my resume when I applied for my current job or at any time since.

Why lie? It’s so easy to buy a REAL degree online, right now.

Debunks the notion there is intelligent life at MIT.

"did not have the courage to correct my resume"

I believe that when applying for an internal job, the person is asked for an "updated resume". Her initial mistake occurred 28 years ago. She could have "updated" her resume at any point and explained that "This new version corrects some old errors" and no one would have cared.

I don't see this as lack of courage. It's just dishonest.

Was Marilee Jones a minority applicant? Academia was all in a dither at one time to hire minorities ... perhaps in their haste MIT didn’t scrutinize her resume/academic credentials to the extent they should have ...

I went to Bunker Hill Community College.

I sometimes leave that off my resume. LOL

Sounds like someone got the goods on her and she was trying to get ahead of the story before it broke.

Too bad a 28-year career had to end over something so stupid.

Interesting, though. I wonder if she really has a degree at all. Either way she’s apparently done a good job where she is ... er ... was...

I had a humanities prof as a freshman, and the guy claimed he had a couple of degrees from Harvard.

Er, nope.

The dean got wind of this, and out our prof went. As the old saying goes: “Good riddance to bad rubbish.”

This is not the worst admission of guilt I have ever heard, but I long to hear someone actually say, “I lied, it was wrong and there is no excuse for my behavior.” And then they would uncomplainingly accept the punishment and refuse to write a book about it.

If she'd been at MIT for 28 years, why would she even care what her CV states about ancient history?

She should have just omitted it without comment on her new resume.

She was clearly qualified for the job no matter what her “credentials” were or were not.
