WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz lashed back at critics Monday who he alleged were conducting a "smear campaign" against him and vowed he would not resign over what he termed unfair charges.

In a statement to an investigating bank panel looking into whether he broke ethical and other rules in a pay-and-promotion deal he directed for his girlfriend, Wolfowitz said the treatment of the issue has become "circus like."

"I, for one, would not give in to such tactics," he said in the statement, which was made public. "And, I will not resign in the face of a plainly bogus charge of conflict of interest."

Gotta respect a guy who defends himself well. This is as good of a self-defense as any I have seen.

In spite of myself, I'm gonna say it: Go, Wolfie!

This who episode just chaps my quinella. When Wolfowitz came on at the World Bank his girlfriend, Shaha Riza, already had a successful career as a senior communications officer established there. She was directed to leave that job to prevent a conflict of interest.

The “promotion” consisted of a higher paying job at the State Department.

The reason for the higher pay was that, as a foreign national working at the World Bank, her salary was not subject to US taxes. Her salary at the State Department is ... hence the raise. She takes home no more now than she did then ...seems only fair given that she was forced to leave a successful career because of Wolfowitz’s appointment.

Once again, to quote Shakespeare, a tale told by idiots (MSM) full of sound and fury, signifying nothing
