Study of N.B.A. Sees Racial Bias in Calling Fouls
New York Times ^ | May 2, 2007 | ALAN SCHWARZ

An academic study of the National Basketball Association, whose playoffs continue tonight, suggests that a racial bias found in other parts of American society has existed on the basketball court as well.

A coming paper by a University of Pennsylvania professor and a Cornell University graduate student says that, during the 13 seasons from 1991 through 2004, white referees called fouls at a greater rate against black players than against white players.

Justin Wolfers, an assistant professor of business and public policy at the Wharton School, and Joseph Price, a Cornell graduate student in economics, found a corresponding bias in which black officials called fouls more frequently against white players, though that tendency was not as strong. They went on to claim that the different rates at which fouls are called “is large enough that the probability of a team winning is noticeably affected by the racial composition of the refereeing crew assigned to the game.”

Considering the NBA is hugely racist against all non-black people (ie - blacks make up only 12% of the population in general but 70-80% of the players of the NBA) - I say they start an immediate and aggressive affirmative action program for white players...

And nobody in the NBA is called for travelling, even when they are doing an impersonation of Walter Peyton.

Can you call a foul on people on the end of the bench?

It’s about a two percentage point difference - that’s noise.

Yeah the NBA refs are not calling fouls on the 7ft2 360 pound white centers that are grabbing 20 rebounds per game.

They just let those guys get away with everything.

The athleticism displayed by those guys constantly driving to the hoop and drawing contact is remarkable, but should be called fairly.

, white referees called fouls at a greater rate against black players than against white players.
‘’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’

This “fact” does not support the conclusion that white refs are racially bias. correlation does not prove causality. It is entirely possible that black players commit more fouls than white players do. Did they study black officials also? Did black officials call less fouls on black players than white players? more fouls? More liberal pseudo science at work.

Keeping in mind: The only reason Lincoln freed the slaves is because he had a vision that there would one day be an NBA.

The article did state the researcher “found a corresponding bias in which black officials called fouls more frequently against white players, though that tendency was not as strong”
