BAGHDAD A car bomb ripped through a wholesale food market in western Baghdad on Sunday, flattening cars and shops and killing at least 30 people in the deadliest of a wave of attacks across Iraq that left at least 54 people dead.
The attack against the market in Baghdad came amid an 11-week-old crackdown by U.S.-led forces intended to bring stability to the capital.
Another car bomb struck the police headquarters in Samarra, a volatile city in the Sunni heartland 60 miles north of Baghdad, killing four police including the police chief and a bystander, police said. A few minutes later, militants in the town attacked a police checkpoint near the Askariya shrine, killing another police officer, police said.
Dozens of Al Qaeda linked insurgents some wearing masks and carrying video cameras and black banners also paraded through the streets, arriving in about 40 cars, in a show of force against the U.S.-Iraqi efforts to tame the Tigris River city.

Baghdad will be virtually fully controlled by Fall (as much as any large city in the world can be.....there cannot be unreasonable expectations).
I do not think that was the “deadliest wave of attacks” by the terrorists against the innocent civilians as the article claims, not even close.
... or until the last Iraqi is dead, whichever comes first.
It's been 4 years and they still manage to pull this stuff off.
When will the Iraqi’s ever f’ing learn? Close the markets to vehicular traffic, but ohh no, here comes another car bombing at guess where.....an open air market...say it ain’t so....
Putz’s do not value their lives very much.
Do get desperate, that is what the terrorits want you to feel, do not let them get into you.
We're in a war. In war bad things happen.
Lets look at what "stuff" we've been able to pull off in these 4 years? The complete removal of one of the most brutal regimes on earth. The setup of a new Iraqi Gov't, Free elections for the first time in the heart of the ME (in two Countries), over 3/4 of AQs original leadership killed or captured...and ditto that % of their less effective replacements, the killing and capturing of additional tens of thousands of their rank and file, planting the seeds of self-worth throughout millions whom voted in higher percentages then does are own country, the cleanup and restoration of an enormous environmental disaster within the Iraq marsh lands, this list could go on and on....
But it's much easier just to b*tch and moan that not everything is perfect in less then 5 years....regarding changing the world....
Is this their version of the Tet Offensive?
Patience. The numbers are trending favorably, and most important of all, politically, these killings are not sectarian. Sectarian violence has plummetted.
Non sectarian violence is explicitly not a civil war, by definition. The Democrats have not caught onto this yet and are painting themselves into a rhetorical corner. If Petraeus reports in July that there were 1000 Iraqi deaths due to Al Queda work, and zero deaths due to Shiite Militias or Sunni retaliation, this will be powerful stuff, and not just in the US. The Iraqis themselves will feel attacked by outsiders.
Car Bomb has now replaced Suicide Bomber?
Are they using remote-controlled cars or are they stategically placed?
Evacuate the “friendlies” and carpet bomb; if it was good enough for LBJ, it’s good enough for Bush.
If we have to turn and run, we may as well clear a path first.
