Thompson's 1994 Issue Positions (retread troll zotted)

Project Vote Smart, which compiles voting records and other background materials on politicians, has finally put up its page on Fred Thompson (OK, maybe "finally" isn't exactly the fairest word when Mr. Thompson hasn't even announced for president — but I've been eager to see it).

Anyway, it seems Mr. Thompson filled out a survey for Project Vote Smart back in 1994, when he was running for Senate. While it's mostly pretty predictable (boo foreign aid, yay low taxes), there are a few parts worth scrutinizing... (see: abortion, education, AIDS)

No candidate who supports constraining first-trimester abortion can win a statewide race in this country, much less the Presidency.

A candidate could be able to get away with allowing only very early abortions (say 8 to 10 weeks) without restriction, but advocating a ban anytime after conception is definitely a general election vote-coster.

I go further no politican in the western world is likely to be elected if he publicily said he would make abortion illegal full stop.

He did, however, support a number of restrictions on abortion: requiring parental notification, allowing states to impose waiting periods, and eliminating all federal funding of abortion. Lastly, he said Congress should leave legislation on abortion to the states.

To be fair, this information is 11 years old. Does he still believe this? Romney claims to have “evolved” on the issue, perhaps this is the case with Mr. Thompson.

>>Under abortion: He checked the box for: “Abortions should be legal in all circumstances as long as the procedure is completed within the first trimester of the pregnancy.” He did, however, support a number of restrictions on abortion: requiring parental notification, allowing states to impose waiting periods, and eliminating all federal funding of abortion. Lastly, he said Congress should leave legislation on abortion to the states.<<

From the article...

The dirty work starts.

Ya know what? I dont support first trimester abortions, but I can understand them as long as they are for rape or incest or sometimes even for a mistake.

I have stated my position here many times and that those who want an abortion have to make up their minds before a baby is in a stage where it becomes viable.

Now that may not suit the fundamentalist pro-lifer but at least its a common sense approach. Sometimes there are situatuions where an abortion is the only good answer, but its certainly early on.

Reagan won two Presidential elections with that position. Bush won two Presidential elections with that position. Hmmm....

We haven’t slipped into the pages of the history books yet. There is still time for a good presidential candidate to open the issue of abortion up for debate again in this country. Tancredo mentioned the 40 million killed. Romney explained how the issue of cloning and embryonic stem cell research changed his mind. The candidates should be willing to take a stand. Reagan did it!

Especially since no politician or elected official CAN make abortion illegal.

Those who are kinda sorta almost antiabortion would become passionately proabortion if confronted with the possibility that their votes could mean anything.

Of course the poster is a Romney whore, so he is not being honest with his comment.

Well well, he actually understands states rights. Imagine that! I see a winner.
