Hispanic leaders upset at radio station's campaign [700 WLW Cincinnati "The Big Juan"]

CINCINNATI - Hispanic leaders are demanding a public apology from a radio station that put up billboards showing a Mexican flag, a donkey, and a mustachioed man in a sombrero with the headline "The Big Juan."

The Hispanic Chamber Cincinnati USA complained that the advertising by WLW-AM stereotyped Hispanics. The community leaders said at a news conference Tuesday that they plan to meet with station executives to talk about sensitivity training and creating a multicultural community advisory board.

WLW, which calls itself "The Big One," is the Cincinnati area's radio ratings leader.

The Hispanic Chamber and the League of United Latin American Citizens last week called on WLW to take down the billboards and said Tuesday that all were being taken down.

It wasn't clear when the billboards, apparently timed around the Cinco de Mayo (Fifth of May) holiday, had been scheduled to come down. WLW-AM General Manager Chuck Frederick didn't return two phone messages Tuesday. A call to WLW's owner, Clear Channel Communications Inc. in San Antonio, was referred to the station.

Billboards with a "crudely depicted ethnic stereotype of a Mexican-American ... do nothing to help our city or its people," Hispanic Chamber Cincinnati USA said in a letter delivered to the station last week. "On the contrary, they serve as a daily reminder of the offensive mindsets that cause the disgraceful acts that divide our community."

But how do the Hispanic leaders know the guy shown is supposed to be Mexican? Are they guilty of stereotyping?

Seems people all across the political spectrum seem bent on cultivating an image of a humorless dud.

No kidding. They still have the “black sambo” images all over Mexico. I guess they can dish it out, but they can’t take it.

Probably because he is holding a Mexican flag.

I listen to WLW every night. I don't see any sensitivity training happening any time soon. Scott Sloan rules!

STOP THIS INSANITY! WE ARE ALL ABOUT TO LOOSE OUR JOY IN LAUGHING AT OUR SELVES. When George Lopez makes fun at us white folk its hillarious! Loosen up baby its a right of passage. We all as immigrants to this great land have had our share. Learn to laugh at yourself! We all have our baggage to carry.

But I guess the billboards are coming down:

BILLBOARD UPDATE
Tuesday, May 8, 2007

We sincerely regret any offense created by our recent billboard advertisements.

We moved quickly last week to request immediate removal by the billboard company.
They are in the final stages of that process.

Johnny looks like he’s getting a Fever! He came to WKRP after being fired from a major station in Los Angeles because he said “booger” on the air.

Those were the days, my friend!

I kind of think he looks like our good Colombian friend Juan Valdez with his donkey.

The Colombians aren’t screeching about this because they are refined and polished unlike the Mexicans.

That is correct. I had forgotten about that.

The Hispanic Chamber and the League of United Latin American Citizens are two groups that are paid to professinally feel a pain in the ass at the slightest urging.
