London - Almost two years after the suicide bomb attacks in London, British police Wednesday arrested the widow of the alleged ringleader, along with three men, on suspicion of supporting terrorism. The 29-year-old woman, named as Hasina Patel, was the wife of Sidique Khan, the suspected ringleader of the four-men suicide cell which blew itself up in the attacks on July 7, 2005.
A total of 52 passengers died and more than 700 were injured in the bombings of three Underground trains and a London bus.
Patel was arrested with two men in the West Yorkshire region, in northern Britain, while a fourth man was arrested in Birmingham, in the British Midlands.
All four were interviewed Wednesday at a high-security London police station on suspicion of commissioning, preparing, or instigating acts of terrorism, police said.
Police said the arrests followed an intelligence-led operation involving Scotland Yard's counter-terrorism command and local units in West Yorkshire and the West Midlands.
They said the inquiry into the 2005 attacks remained a "painstaking investigation" into whether anyone knew what the attackers had been planning and who might have helped them.
"We don's perceive any threat from the addresses that we are searching at this moment," a police spokesman said.
The unarmed police operation had been launched after "meetings with councillors and key community leaders" in the area.
"It is a high-profile investigation but a low key response in terms of how we are policing this operation," said the spokesman.
The arrests come after four men were detained in connection with the attacks last month.
Three of them have since been charged with "conspiring with the bombers to cause explosions."
You’d think the wife would have kept a very very low profile in the wake of the arrests from 2005.
Maybe the fact the Islamofacists don’t want their wives to be educated is working to our advantage?
