PRIME Minister John Howard said today he unapologetically used the word "assimilate" when it came to absorbing Muslim citizens into the community.
Mr Howard said assimilating new citizens into the wider community helped tackle radicalism among a minority of Muslims.
In Tuesday's Budget, Treasurer Peter Costello allocated $461,000 to programs that help Muslim communities integrate.
"I think it's in the interests of everybody," Mr Howard said on Southern Cross radio.
"There's every reason to try and assimilate - and I unapologetically use that word 'assimilate' - a section of the community, a tiny minority of whose members have caused concern.
"After all, once somebody's become a citizen of this country the best thing we can do is to absorb them in the mainstream."

The problem is that there are too many that don’t want “success”. They want domination.
Howard is a real leader!
A few bad laws and a few worse court rulings that took way our rights of association.
Back when our ancestors immigrated people had the right to not hire anyone they were not comfortable with or had the right not to sell a home to someone or not to rent to someone.
The libs will say that these laws made it illegal to be prejudiced in business transactions and to a large part yes it is true. But these laws also removed a big incentive to immigrants to assimilate.
In the past immigrants wanted to fit in so that life would be easier, now minorities and immigrants can be bullies. If they feel that someone is being unfair they can file a complaint and make a business owners life miserable and put him out of business.
The pendulum has swung too far.
Just look at what the Flying Imams have done. Soon everyone will be too afraid to say no to any Muslim.
Too bad Bush doesn’t ask the same of Latinos.
That was my first thought. For the legal ones.
The illegal ones should just be asked to leave. Or ORDERED to leave.
We need someone like this for our president.
