Iraq parliament seeks U.S. exit

BAGHDAD — A majority of Iraq’s parliament has signed a proposed bill that would require a timetable for the withdrawal of U.S. soldiers from Iraq and freeze current troop levels.

The bill would create a timeline for a gradual departure, much like what some Democratic lawmakers in the United States have demanded, and would require the Iraqi government to secure parliament’s approval before any further extensions of the U.N. mandate for foreign troops in Iraq, which expires at the end of this year.

“We haven’t asked for the immediate withdrawal of multinational forces; we asked that we should build our security forces and make them qualified and at that point there would be a withdrawal,” said Baha al- Araji, a parliamentarian allied with the anti-American Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, whose supporters drafted the bill. “But no one can accept the occupation of this country.”

We won. We ousted the tyrant. He is executed. A democracy is born, a constitution created, a parliament elected. And the elected representatives - a majority of them - want to stand on their own.

If we listen to the voice of Iraq's democracy, we can still stave off a Democrat landslide next year. Pelosi and Reid will be sent back to the minority, and Hillary will go back to being a minority senator from N.Y.

WE plan to leave when the job is done, and the Iraqis want us to do just that.

Yes, I want the US to begin withdrawing as soon as possible. If we don't, disaster looms next year - i.e., Hillary becomes president. I didn't want the GOP to lose Congress, but it happened. I don't want the GOP to lose the White House, but it could happen if the Iraq situation doesn't change.

WE plan to leave when the job is done,

We better start leaving well before the 2008 presidential election, or Hillary will be the commander in chief in January 2009. If that happens, everything you say and hope about Iraq is down the drain. Even more important, our freedoms at home will be in peril.

How do you immediately go from see the US as helping to seeing them as occupiers? How ungrateful.

How ungrateful.

If they want to be independent, what's wrong with that? That was the goal - to free them from control by Saddam so they could be free. We tossed Saddam, so it's time to start letting them be free and govern themselves.

Nothing wrong with Independence — that is why the US is there, to help them achieve that goal. But the US should not be call “occupiers.” There is a negative connotation to that word. It implies that the Iraqis have no freedom. Liberator would have been a better word to use.

This is one of Sadr's henchmen talking. That's his job - to accelerate an American pullout so Sadr can start making Iraq an Iranian province.

Me personally, I couldn't give a darn about gratitude. I'd be happy with an Iraqi government friendly to American interests. Elected or not.

I can’t remember where I’ve read it; but Baker for the Study Group is dealing behind Pres. Bush’s back a withdrawal of troops in Iraq. He wants to convince that a withdrawal would be best, naturallt siding with Sadr, and the dems.

Interestingly, I read a small notice in the press this morning mentioning that Sadr is known to be still in Iran. His whereabouts have been unknown for some time; he went to Iran, but supposedly came back, although now we have apparently confirmed that he is still in Iran and pulling the strings from there.

I find it very interesting that Sadr’s supporters and the dems want the same thing, US withdrawal.

You, sir, are an asshat, have been one on every post you’ve made that I have read. You are merely trying to sow dissention on FR. There are a few of you on this forum that are trying to push left wing ideas and pretend you are consevative, among them are the Rudybots. Only an asshat would believe getting out of Iraq is the right thing to do. Also, yesterday the Iraqi government asked us to stay, I guess you missed that article(snicker).

I wouldn’t doubt that this was something the Bush Administration has been seeking for the past 5 months. Cheney’s most recent visit probably cemented it.

” I’d be happy with an Iraqi government friendly to American interests.”

Prediction:

After, possibly during, the US drawdown/pullout, the Iraqi government will denounce the US as being a tool of Israel and make nice with Iran. France should have taught us that there is no gratitude for having been saved from oneself.

I agree. Especially the last sentence. There is nothing noble about “democracy.” It is tyranny of the majority. We (at least used to be) a Republic, but somehow several decades ago, our leaders lost sight of this. If there were a king of Iraq ruling, and he was friendly to the US, I’d be happy. It is true that Sadr and his minions pushed this through, but the writing is on the wall. Between them and the Dems, it appears we will be leaving sooner than we should.
