New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson formally announced his candidacy for president here Monday, launching a bilingual campaign for the Democratic nomination that emphasizes his Latino heritage, his extensive diplomatic and political experience and his knowledge of issues.

Richardson, 59, the son of a Mexican mother and half-Mexican father, drew a large crowd of supporters -- and, perhaps as important, reporters -- to a ballroom in downtown Los Angeles for the announcement, which had been all but a foregone conclusion for many weeks. Richardson chose to announce his bid in California, the state where he was born, in part to attract as much media attention as possible in a race that already includes numerous high-profile candidates.

Reconquista Richardson should have waited to see what happens next with the amnesty bill. He may be eligible for the Z-Visa.

bilingual campaign for the Democratic nomination

Excuse me, but did I miss that we've done away with that little tidbit requiring citizenship applicants, aka future legal voters, be able to speak English?

I agree, he’s the only one I can have an ounce of respect for.

But that doesn’t make him any less dangerous. Look what he’s done with NM.

Oh, and if Kerry distances himself from the guy, THAT says volumes.

BTW—being the “most qualified” Democrat contender is kinda like being the “smartest” kid on the short bus.

Don’t forget about his expertise as job recruiter for Monica Lewinsky.

Anyone who campaigns in Spanish loses my vote. Not that I would EVER vote for Richardson. How disgusting.

“Don’t forget about his expertise as job recruiter for Monica Lewinsky.”

I think she did what Clinton hired her for.

He’s just cadging for a VP spot with whoever wins the nomination for that party. As usual he is disingenuous and not too bright. I guess he went to LA to get more publicity - not enough press coverage in Santa Fe or Albuquerque. Anyway, not to worry - nobody is going to vote for Goober Pyle for president.

Due to work I’m doing on a local transit issue, I’ll be attending a fundraiser for Richardson in Seattle the day after tomorrow. Does that mean I need decontamination before logging back in at FR?
