Fire some government employees [Fed employees can't get fired, no matter how badly they screw up]

There is simply no accountability for government employees. Once they have a job, it's practically a job for life. Almost no one ever gets fired from a federal government job. The statistics are staggering.

According to the Office of Personnel Management, only one in 5,000 non-defense workers get fired annually for poor performance.

From 1984 through 2001 – a period of 17 years – of 28,000 employees in the State Department, only six were fired for poor performance.

Only one person was fired from the entire Education Department in 2001. Only two were fired in the entire Transportation Department that year. Only two were fired from the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

In all the federal bureaucracies combined in 2001, only 434 employees were fired – and that was higher than the annual average. That 434 figure represents a negligible 0.02 percent of all federal government employees.

My wife works in public school administration. The school has been building a case for over 5 years to fire a tenured elementary school teach - for, get this - constantly being late for work. As many as three days a week, they will find her 5th grade classroom sans a teacher. She doesn’t even call in late. They have to police her tardiness so the kids aren’t unattended. I can’t fathom this type of work environment. I would have canned her 4 years and 51 weeks ago.

This is why they donate so heavily to the Democrats. Unions, lawyers and government workers donated millions to Democrats.

Unions at work. I wonder what the ethnic make up of Fed workers is? What is the ethnic make up of those fired?

Private anecdotes will abound. While working as a civilian for the Air Force in Ohio, I watched a manager assign one of his people to sit in the snack bar all day. When at her regular desk, she did no work, was disruptive, and distracting to those around her. She was partially disabled, but that had nothing to do with her inability/unwillingness to work; however, because of her disablility, it was virtually impossible to fire her. His solution was to move her where she would do the least harm. Our tax dollars paid for her to read dime novels in the snack bar all day.

The Medicare and Social Security financial messes PALE in comparison to the debt of pensions and retirement owed by the Federal and State governments of this country.

Notice this doesn’t include military. I know guys who have been tossed for poor performance, body fat, etc., but if you’re a civilian, hey—free ride for life!

If we put the fear of God into them, maybe government wouldn’t be so reviled.

The system requires that they be “counseled” for each alleged “failure or offense”. Then they are given so much time to “fix” their wrong. Then if they meet that time table, all is forgiven. Then you start over with the next screw up. We had a civilian that stayed screwed up. But, normally by the time you get to the end of all that counseling, etc., the service member rotates out, and a new military person becomes this civilian employee’s supervisor. Guess, what????????? DO OVER!!! They get a fresh start. You cannot simply pass along the file of screw ups to your replacement and get rid of these people. They get to start over AGAIN. And the same thing repeats itself over and over and over and over. You get the point. You CANNOT get rid of civilian employees, while troops can go directly to jail!

forgive me but it is entitlement pure and simple and if you look at who is filling the ranks of most low end civil jobs whether at the fed, state, or even in public universities....its another form of entitlement to specific classes of people.

these low level civil servants wield a great deal of power too, especially when you look at them being the decisionmakers at state offices, dmvs, university financial aid, and government contracting offices.

then you have the managers who are the other side of the coin and entitle themselves to merit pay, credit cards—and entitle their children and their children’s friends to fellowships (at a very reasonable wage) on the government dime.

i have been a contractor supporting the federal government for years and have very little respect for the quality of people who work there. it is too easy to spend someone else’s money.

"Unions at work."

Is this the only reason? I assume that there are certain laws that Congress has passed that protects these people like some endangered snail darter.

A lot of problems reflexively attributed to Bush are actually failures of the entrenched bureaucracy. It has rebelled openly at the demands of our MBA president for efficiency, adaptability to new challenges, and accountability. Newt has thoughts on this, and he proposes moving to entrepreneurial management.

Glory Be! At last some truth in WND. Having worked with government civilians for several years and been a government contractor for several years more they are correct. It is almost impossible to fire any federal government civilian. They get their pay raise if they do work or not so what difference does it make as one said I have typed one letter this week and that is enough work for me. They next letter will have to wait until next week.

Some people may think that the ability to fire employees can’t make much difference, since not many people ever get fired at an at will type of company. But there is a significant difference: Most employees, if they think there is even a chance that they would be fired, tend to do an acceptable job. It is the fact that they have something to lose that keeps employees on their toes. When you take away the risk of losing your job over unacceptable performance, then you see a lot of people pushing the envelope, because they can get away with it.

I manage a large IT department at a university and coming from the private sector I have seen some of the worst examples of management here in my life. They recently did away with the scores on the evals as no one wanted to "judge" others, plus everyone avoids confrontation. The number of people who claim 40 hours of work per week and only come in half of that is unbelievable as well.

“Private anecdotes will abound.”

Oh, I have a bunch. Not only can they not be fired, they can be hired to do absolutely nothing. I worked with one government worker who was retarded, couldn’t get a drivers license, or live by himself. I never knew him to produce one smidgen of work in the 4 years I was there. God only knows how much he made.

Don’t get me started on the people who got caught having sex at work (not with their spouses) and got passes, the guy who used to go up to the office after midnight and broadcast a webcam of him playing with himself and still works in the same senior management position with no disciplinary action taken.

I could go on and on and on.....

I have to agree with this, working as a contractor a few years ago I saw a few Gov’t. “employees” who we all wondered how they kept their jobs. Yes, when they screwed up there at the Lab, they were moved somewhere “harmless”.

I have a belief that this is a major problem with the CIA.
There are so many Democrats within this org., that is why it is so corrupt!!!!

You need no forgiveness for speaking the truth. One of the reasons I’m leaving this area is the numerous problems I have had with just this group. Here I live, they (lower-level civil servants) are about 90% black women. They have no qualms about ruining your life or costing you thousands of dollars just because they are in some perpetual, never-ending bad mood. Smiles are met with eye-rolling and deep sighs. Kindness is met with disdain.

The power they yield is vast. You can get nothing done without going through them and they know it and use it.
